A continuation of my previous post.
With the following knowledge on the Norwegian Navy and what are some of the talks we are starting to hear:
- a class of offshore going warship in similar size as current frigates.
- A common design corvette, over 50 meter (command vessel for USV?)
- Starting to use USV (going from testing stage to, use)
-------------
Short version of text bellow:
- main gun forward
- superstructure more forward
- main weapon deck on center
- main powerplant more aft, Hybrid powerplant. almost fully electric propulsion
- large helicopter deck for more space for UAV operation
- aft deck with space fro 18+- meter USV or several small one. With a special solution to pull in a vessel.
So I based the frigate on the pervious design, with the knowledge based above. I took inspiration Austal concept of Large Unmanned Surface Vessel (LUSV). The result was:
- 56-76mm gun on the foredeck.
- Superstructure and bridge moved more forward.
- main weapon deck moved to in front of the funnel
- funnel and main propulsion are moved more aft, than on current Norwegian frigates.
- I have main powerplant aft, by saying the ship is using an Hybrid powerplant, where the only engine's connected to the shaft, is electric motors and two of the main diesel engines.
- The main turbine and most of the diesel engines are operating as Generator only. And thus can always operate at the most optimum rpm at any time and load.
- Only 2 main diesel-generator are connected to the shaft, trough gearbox.
- There are 2 or 3 electric motors. If 3 electric motors, then there are 2 smaller one on each shaft and one large one connected directly to the gearbox. If only electric motors.... I prefer the 3 electric motor installation.
- With not having the direct pressure from a jet-turbine on the tear and wear on the gearbox are somewhat reduced.
- I would suggest the main gearbox can split it self up in 3 but also have a cross feed, incase of problems with either electric motors or a section of gearbox. Thus can operate either on shaft or both shaft at reduced speed, due to a cross feed system that operate separate from main portion of the gearbox.
- Enlarged helicopter deck to give space for 40mm/CIWS/RAM and also UAV operation
- Aft deck is dedicated for USV, with space for 1 18+- vessel (drone), or several smaller one. the docking procedure will be by the vessel entering a sort of crane that will hold the vessel and pull it in, together with a winch. Will be a little slower than a purpose designed dock system. But will allow to use a common design, without having to rework the stearn design.
