Payen unbuilt military designs
Payen's "
Avion-Flèche" concept had potential beyond racers and single-seat fighters, and Payen tried several times to interest the French military in heavier models.
The Payen Pa 310CB was designed for the 1937 C.2 (2 seat fighter) programme. The design never progressed from the drawing board, and lost out to the SNCASE SE.100.
The Payen Pa321AC "Air Cruiser" was submitted for both the 1934 and 1937 C.3 fighter programmes as a heavy fighter/light bomber. Like all of Payen's designs visibilty for the pilot would have been extremely poor with the far-rear location of the cockpit. Once again the complexity of the propulsion system and the novelty of the design led to no official interest. France instead built the Potez 630.
In 1938 Mitsubishi contacted Payen to develop a carrier-based bomber from the Pa 112. Payen developed the Pa 400 with a novel (for the time) nosewheel undercarriage. As international politics became chilly Payen decided not to get French approval to export the design, and Japan instead developed the Nakajima B6N Tenzan "Jill".
But ... in 1941 American intelligence reviewed a Japanese magazine that had published a picture of a fighter aircraft called the Suzukaze 20. Expecting this to be a type about to enter service it was allocated the code name "Omar". This aircraft was an obvious development of Payen's "
Avion-Flèche", however it was an intelligence ruse rather than a real design.
