Flemming-class fast assault transport

[ img ]

The Flemmings were born of the experience of the 1343-1344 Etoko Islands campaign, which demonstrated a need for fast warships capable of carrying at least several companies worth of marines to landing zones. Originally, destroyers would carry platoon sized units each, and could provide direct fire support during a landing. As landings became more hotly contested, destroyers would not suffice, especially since they were needed for more important roles.

The Flemmings filled this gap as a conversion of the under-construction Cora class frigates. The aft superstructure and gun batteries were removed, and in its place was trooper berthing and four LCVPs for ferrying marines to shore. The ship maintained most of its ASW capabilities (save for the Hedgehog which was removed in favor of more air defense), and could also defend itself from light air attacks and surface threats. The Flemming's weaponry and speed are one of the most important factors to her design, allowing her the versatility that larger troop transports are not capable of.

Due their size and importance in naval invasions, fast assault transports like the Flemmings were attacked the most out of any type of ship in the late war period.

Beautiful. APDs are a really underappreciated type.

Potentilla-class motor torpedo/missile boat

[ img ]

The Potentillas, also known as the PT-906 class, were Antara's last motor torpedo boats after a long run of hundreds of World War era boats. While the Navy was content with their pre-existing stock of boats after the war, they took note of Desnian innovations in fast attack boat designs. Most notably was the use of hydrofoils to increase the top speed of a boat - by lifting most of it out of the water, thus reducing water drag.

The PT-906 class was the result of the Navy's experiments into the technology. As built, the boats mounted somewhat antiquated 38mm autocannons as they still existed in great numbers, but soon to be replaced with the 25mm Mk65. The Mk65 was the navalised variant of the Army's air defense weapon. The Mk65 was the close relative of modern CIWS, however in this case it was the boat's primary armament aside from its torpedoes and missiles.

The Potentillas were stationed as island and harbor patrol vessels for Antara's frontier naval bases. These boats were known to have been in active service during the 1364 War as well as the Nuclear War. With 14 built constructed, all were scrapped by 1398, except for three which were lost in 1364.

Specifications

Tonnage - 130 tonnes standard (as built)
Speed - 51 knots (as built)
Range - 1300nm at 14 knots
Gun armament - 2xII 38mm/60 (as built, gunboat), 25mm Mk65 rotary cannon (1369)
Launched armament - 530mm torpedoes or RGM1 ASu missiles.

Specifications

Tonnage - 250 tonnes standard
Speed - 42 knots
Range - 1700nm at 14 knots
Gun armament - 2xI 76/50, 4xII 25mm

I suppose this gunboat is more of less equivalent with Asheville Class?
