Gloster Gladiator in Greek service
Gladiators served with Greece from before the war, and all were donations and gifts.
Initially 2 aircraft were bought by a Greek businessman from Egypt and donated to the Hellenic air force. They were used as advanced trainers, with 1 aircraft being lost to an accident. Greece did not follow up on the gift with a purchase, and the remaining Gladiator remained in service until the Greek capitulation.
With Italian aggression in the Mediterranean, Britain provided additional combat aircraft for the defence of Greece. Amongst the types supplied were Gladiators that had been serving in North Africa and were fresh from fighting against Italy. RAF crews from 80 and 112 Squadrons flew their Gladiators to Greece, and were returned by Bombay transports back to North Africa as their units were upgraded to fly new P-40 Tomahawks.
