Dornier Do 11D in Bulgarian service

The original Dornier Do F was Germany first secret heavy bomber developed in the early 1930's, and in 1933 was renamed as the Do 11.

[ img ]

The Dornier Do 11 was not a successful aircraft, with its retractable undercarriage mechanism being so unreliable that the aircraft were often operated with the gear locked down. Vibration issues led to a reworking of the design to become the Do 11D which was withdrawn from German service by 1936.
In 1937 Herman Göring gave a personal gift to Tsar Boris III of a "starter air force" including 12 Dornier Do 11D's. The aircraft became the nucleus of the reconstituted Bulgarian Air Force, receiving Boris's personal seal insignia on the tail. The Bulgarians had better luck with the Dorniers than the Germans, with several aircraft remaining in service into 1941.
