Seversky AT-12 in Swedish service

In parallel with the single-seat P-35 series, Seversky developed a 2-seat long-range "convoy fighter" fighter-bomber, the 2PA series, for export. Initially a single wheeled and a float-equipped version were supplied, along with manufacturing rights, to the Soviet Union, but further production never eventuated. In a controversial move that lost Seversky his own company, 20 aircraft were sold to the Japanese navy.




Sweden was the biggest customer, ordering 52 aircraft to enter service as the B 6. Fearing their capture in a German invasion of Sweden, the US Government embargoed their delivery after only the first 2 aircraft had been delivered. One aircraft was lost in a training accident within a month, and the other was relegated to becoming a headquarters staff hack, until written-off in 1953.

Seversky AT-12 in US service

With the impounding of the 50 Swedish-destined aircraft, the USAAC impressed them as AT-12 Guardsmen in the advanced trainer role.



The AT-12 were rapidly replaced by T-6 Texans, and ended their days as base commanders' hacks.
A single AT-12 still remains in flying condition at the Chino "Planes Of Fame" museum, painted in a reproduction of the bare-metal colours of the P-35A flown by Lt Buzz Wagner in the Philippines in 1941.

Seversky A8V1 "Dick"

The aircraft that cost Alexander de Seversky his company, and caused Seversky Aircraft Company to become Republic Aviation Corporation.



With losses to their G3M bombers flying from Formosa into China, Japan ordered 20 of the Seversky 2PA-B3 long-range "convoy fighters". The deal was concluded in secret, and the aircraft were delivered to become the Imperial Japanese Navy A8V-1 Type S Two-Seat Fighter. The aircrafts' history in Japan is not well detailed, but the performance was found to have disappointing performance and were relegated to a reconnaissance role based from Nanking. Assuming they would remain in service they were allocated the American reporting name of "Dick", however they appear to have been removed from service before the attack on Pearl Harbour. Three aircraft were passed on to civil use, becoming transports for Japanese newspaper companies.
With the export order becoming common knowledge, the poor financial position of Seversky led to the board expressing a lack of confidence in Seversky himself, removing him and restructuring the company. Adopting the more patriotic name of Republic the overhauled company continued developing the P-35 fighter to become the highly successful P-47 Thunderbolt.
