SAAB B 5

As part of their rearmament plan Sweden embarked on licence production of the Northrop/Douglas 8A-1 as the ASJA, then later SAAB, B 5.

The first prototype was built by Douglas, while components for a second prototype were shipped to Sweden to act as the pattern aircraft for local production. The aircraft was generally similar to the standard A-17, but with fixed undercarriage to enable ski operations in winter. The prototype was designated as the only B 5A, later becoming a target tug and designated B 5D.
ASJA constructed 63 B 5B aircraft in 1940, featured a domed cockpit and Swedish radios and armament.
By 1941 ASJA had been integrated into SAAB, and production of a further 39 were constructed under the SAAB badge as B 5C's.
By 1944 the B 5's were replaced in service by the SAAB B 17.

Seversky P-35A in Swedish service

To replace their outdated Gloster Gladiator's Sweden selected Seversky's export version of the P-35 fighter.

Based on the EP-7 racer, Sweden selected the EP-1-68 (Export Pursuit) for service as the J 9 fighter. The EP-1-68 differed from the P-35 by having an extended rear section and the fitment of a passenger/reconnaissance camera compartment behind the cockpit. Sixty aircraft were ordered in 1939, and an additional 60 were ordered in early 1940. For Swedish use the aircraft were fitted with Swedish metric instrumentation and Swedish armament.
The initial batch of aircraft were constructed by Seversky and delivered via Norway in early 1940. By the time the second batch of aircraft were constructed, the company had changed management to become Republic Aviation, and fearing a German invasion of Sweden the US government impounded the aircraft.
The aircraft remained in Swedish service as front-line fighters until 1947, with some remaining in use as hacks until the 1950's.

Seversky P-35A in US service

The 60 Swedish J 9 aircraft were impressed into US service as the P-35A.

Forty five aircraft were immediately shipped to the Philippines, where they arrived still in Swedish delivery colours. The aircraft were repainted into USAAC bare-metal colours, but the Swedish instrumentation and manuals led to difficulty in operating the aircraft.
In late 1941 the P-35A's were started to be repainted in olive drab as Pacific tensions increased. The P-35A's assisted in the defense of the Philippines with the Japanese invasion, with the bulk of the fleet destroyed on the ground. Operations included fighter and attack missions, and including a rescue mission, evacuating 2 passengers in the fighter's rear compartment. No aircraft survived from the Philippines.
The remaining 15 aircraft that were not deployed remained in America as instructional aircraft.
