Somehow I figured your idea of a vacation included more drawing!
Very strange concept they had back then, but I guess with all the merchant tonnage lost in WW1 it made some sense at the time.

OK, so with limited carrying capacity and huge fuel costs................ how does it pay for itself even in the era under consideraton

I guess that's why it was never build

Well, a converted hull is going to be less efficient that one designed from the keel up since the hull is going to be designed to naval, not commercial standards (heavier hull plates, armor built into the hull and hard to remove, greater compartmentalization, etc...) and the hull shape is designed for speed, not cargo. She looks like she retains her original engines, which would make her overpowered for a cargo ship and even if she is run at low power her engines would be less efficient and you would still have their large mass to move and that wastes power.

well, it seems to have gotten an different funnel layout, so most likely smaller (and maybe different) engines. but still.... that's why they never build it
