In irl the RSwN lost 1/3 of its budget and all large surface ships was decomisdionef in 1958 and 1972. The RSwN had to turn to torpedo- and missle boats and a few corvettes.

My idea for a alt history/ alt universe svenario is this: the RSwN retains its budget and size. Each ship is modernized after 15-20yrs replaced with a ship similar in size and tonnage after 30yrs.

For example;
Aircraft/ training/ airdefence cruiser Gotland is launched in 1934. She is irl refitted in 1941 and 1955. She is decomissoned in 1965 and replaced by a ship similar in mission, size and tonnage. Irl ships of that time and size are soviet Kynda cruiser and french Suffren DDG.

i imagine a 135m, 5500t shio with good flight deck, tartar or terrier SAM, with good facilities for cadet training (like a small Vittorio Veneto or Haruna).

What do you think of the idea?

I like it.

Maybe even something like the French Jeanne D'Arc training ship. A bit more capable ship that could replace the Älvsnabben when it was used as a training ship as well.

First entry

Swedish cruiser squadron 2.0
In 1958 the Royal Swedish navy reached its all time high with up to 200 warships, an able to commison thee cruiser squadrons with 1 light cruiser. 6 destroyers and 6 motortorpedo boats. But the same year the naby lots 1/3 om its budget and had to cancel or decommisione several ships with out replacement.

In 1972 came the nex backdrop. All protecction og trade and merchant shipping was cancelled from the navy’s mission by the politians. All large warships was die to be decommisioned within 10 years, most of the where not replaced or later replaced by corvettes.

In this scenario or AU the history is changed so the navy maintatins its budget and keeps her large warships and ASW escort capabilities.

This is design os for the replacemnet of the 18 light destroyers the navy builldt just before or during World war 2. The ship os duw be launch approx 30 yeras agter the ship she replaces. In this case 1966-1972.
She is given the same sensor suite as her larger cousin the Halland class with ARTE 62 (LW02) firecontrol, PS-401 surface search radar and PS-47 (LW02) air search radar. She mounts 3 tubes for wire guided torpedoes and a rwin ril for the RBS08 SSM. Main gun is the fully automatic Bogors TAK120 L60.
The ships recive a midlife upgrade during the early 1980s where the heavy RBS08 rail and 53cm torpedoes are removed and replaced by the brand nrw RBS15 SSM. The airdefence is improved by the RB71S ”SeaFlash – Skyflash missiles also used by the airforce JA 37 Viggen fighters. Adapted for shipborne use with start boosters. The Ericson 9LV fire control radar guides the missile.

The elderly radar suite is replaced by new search and firecontorl radars such as the Seagiraffe and the SPS-480 also used by the airforce for airspace surveillence.

SPS-48 is heavy and expensive, and I can't really envision fitting it to a ship with nothing better than Sea Sparrow. I suspect the latter could also be adapted to WM20 guidance, so replacing the director would not be necessary.

edit: at least some WM20-series definitely could guide Sea Sparrow. That's what the Iroquois class originally used.

The closes similar vessel to these in Scandinavia with similar weapons, would be Oslo class frigate (Length of: 96.6 meter), you can have a look at them, to see how Norway upgraded them from the 60's and up to close 2000

I gave har similar sensor upgrade as IRL Halland got around 1980. Her ARTE-62 (WM-20) was replaced by the swedish made ARTE-726 (9LVmk2) still in use with the Koster. As it is not Seasparrow but Skyflash adopted for naval use by alt history Sweden (Irl bought skyflash Rb71 to the JA 37 Fighters). So i thought it was a good idea to adopt the swedish FC to it (Ericson alao build the radar for JA 37). The 9LV mk2 also contains optronic FC with TV or IR camera, which MW-02 does not.

The SPS-48 i a big set, it was bought by the airforce in 1980 as PS-840 high/ medium altitue landbased surveillence radars. My idea is that the navy also could be a part of that deal, replaceing their PS-47/ LW-02 sets.

Halland class was a much larger vessel then you have here, and thus can handle much more weight. it's more an less, a 30+ meter difference. and Halland weight almost 3 times you'r vessel

That's fine, but the problem is weight and power needed to run that radar, with the SPS-48 you will get an extremely top heavy ship, you are after all putting something big an heavy, up high. I have also never seen a 90 meter vessel with SPS-48, most of them have a lightweight radar, just like Oslo class have

An interesting concept and a nice blend of weapons and sensors. I do agree the SPS-48 is probably overkill for the size and capability of this design, maybe a little more length wouldn't hurt too as it feels rather cramped.
