My first entry for 2020
The Royal Mail Ship Magdalena was built in the years following WW2 as part of a renewal program for the Royal Mail ageing fleet. Many ships were lost during the war, and to keep alive the vital services between Great Britain and South America a new passengers and cargo liner was built. The Magdalena was the result. Her maiden voyage took place in the early months of 1949, and when on her northbound leg of that voyage, the ship ran aground off the Brazilian coast, and later broke into two parts, just behind the bridge. No lives were lost but the new ship was a total wreck.
