Shipbucket

A couple of years ago some very odd blueprints where found by some naval enthusiast in the Swedish war archives - an aircraft carrier, carrying DH SeaVampaires J28S. There was lots of discussions within the community regarding why, what is this and so on. The blueprints where declassified in 1984(!) but have never been heard of.

The designer was one of the head ship designers of navy at that time, working with ships like the Öland class destroyers, old Belos submarine rescue ship and Halland class destroyers.

This is most likley a private venture which presented to C-in-C of Navy, who refused it, aswell as the Naval warfare academy magazine. The carrier would most likely not work to short, no handling gear, catapults and so on. If the navy wanted carriers, the surplus market was huge at the time.

But it is a fun ship-

A very interesting concept, but is flawed in many ways. One thing which stands out is the low level of the bridge, hence a low flying operations view point. This will hamper the flying operations, as the personnel won't be able to look at the whole flight deck, which may results in accidents.
Also the 120mm guns are very heavy looking, which will give this ship a high centre of gravity.
I'm not sure about the use of jets on this small carrier which has no catapult, nor arresting wires.
The drawing itself, well as usual, is a masterpiece.

Yes, I totally agree with you , same opinion as the C-in-C of the Navy 1946. The admiral didn’t even care to commeny until after severaöl letters from the engineer. He has an even more cray develeopment of the ship with 2 8” trippel turrets hidden below the flight deck where hatches är raised when the guns are used. Drving carriers take 20 years and a war to learn. A otherwise so bright engineer would understand that there us no use for a Carrier i swedish area of operations, all sea lanes are coverd by landbased aircraft.

As a helicopter carrier in the 1960s it might have worked on the north Atlantic/ North sea convoy routes.

I remember coming across this concept a couple of years ago and being interested to know more about it. Pondered drawing it a few times but never got round to it, so its nice to see it represented here.
A pipdream indeed, but lets not forget that in the late 1940s, many nations got carrier fever and planned to buy or build carriers, including Argentina and Venezuela. All these plans never went any further at the time but they are an interesting insight to the planning of the era.

Hidden triple 8in turrets sounds crazy!
