Hi all!

That's what I originally wanted to submit to the real life challenge, but it was clear very quickly that it would have taken me too long. It's as accurate as I could get it with what photographs are available on the www; some details I still had to draw on a best guess basis, because the photographs were too small, too grainy or (in most cases) the area of interest were so shadowed nothing showed. I'm sure there are better pics out there, so I'll just show what I have…

USS Oriskany CV-74, as of 1974 (that's what the source drawing I used was labeled in Russian anyway)




Any suggestions?

Great drawing.

Obviously, it is an excellent drawing, and a worthy addition to the archive. My only criticism is that I think the SPS-43 and SPN-6 (?) are a little heavy-handed in their rendering. The SPS-43 especially is an old, crappy drawing, which I feel comfortable saying since it's mine

Compare to the LSO platform in the overhead view, which I think more effectively captures the lightweight construction.

Carriers require a thoughtful, steady hand in order to present appropriate detail without letting the drawing get crowded or overwhelming. I particularly like the way you've rendered the aircraft crane sponson.

Coincidentally, I made a shiny new SPS-43 just the other day.

Great stuff. Really anything of this scale/magnitude looks fantastic in the SB style when produced by you!

My only minor nitpick (at first glance) is that you've used Mark 67 directors when the Essex class ships all had Mark 37s (even after SCB refits). From a casual glance thru some Oriskany photos it looks like the ship was fitted with the late-mod Mark 37 directors with cockpits for the director captain's slewing sight, and Mark 25 radars (as on all postwar Mark 37 installations). Also, the shields for the directors have additional bulging on the front (I've also seen this on the refitted Iowas -- my suspicion is that it was to add space inside an already cramped director). It's somewhat visible in these photos:

Fantastic work. I would note however that the shape of the rudder, or rather the shape of the fixed section relative to the non-fixed section is a bit off:



I'd also note that the same series from navsource shows the zinc strips that were near the screws:
