Admiral Kruz class was original designed to operate either alone or escorting a carrier, but most of the time it had two ASW destroyers with it.
The class got it opportunity to show it's firepower during Vietnam war, when screening a US-force both at sea and on land and at some time provided artillery fire, at one ocasion HMCS R.Adm. Petter the 5th under command of Commander Juliuse "Bad Banana" Smerner went so close to shore, to give artillery support, that the ship was hit several time, by small arms fire. other than that, they didn't see much action, Caledonia didn't relay want to be involved (officially), but unofficially was willingly go in to support in a emergency, due to this, more than 1500 Caledonia comandos have been in Vietnam on rescue missions
In the 70's the long term program to refurbish these two giants in to a new role started. There New role was to operate together with Caledonia Missile cruisers. This Cruiser force consisting of 2 missile cruiser and 1 heavy cruiser with destroyer/frigate-escort and occasionally with a escort-carrier was nicked: "The admirals fist"
The 1982 refit was mostly a maintenance to machinery and systems. it included also upgrade of electronics to modern fleet standard. Main guns received an upgrade and change of equipment due to it often being used for testing out new shells for future 155 mm ships guns.
It last periode of it carrier was used to go on cruises and form/train future officers
