So after posting my VC10 derivative Belfast alternative, I started thinking again about the way the British ministerial mindset works (I've had a few professional run-ins with the civil service in the past) and realised that the Belfast would probably have been ordered come hell or high water, for purely political reasons. I also started thinking about the alternate freighter programme for a freighter to bypass the Middle East, but more on that later. So, if the Ministries of Aviation and Supply would have ordered the Belfast regardless of what the War Office said, why not improve the Belfast?



Simple idea here, the Army specified the need to airlift a 57-ton Conqueror ARV and Shorts modified the SC5 to carry such a load. The fuselage was strengthened and stretched to accommodate the same weight in other cargo, the wing redesigned to increase span, area and fuel stowage, and the engines replaced with (fictitious) Bristol Tartarus turboprops, which was based on the Olympus and eventually gave rise to the Marine Olympus a few years later.

An interesting concept for sure.
I'd be interested to hear more about the fictional Tartarus.
The first Marine Olympus TM1 was 23,200shp, so I'm thinking something around 15,000shp as a ballpark possibility? That would make this design something analogous to the Antonov An-22.

I was thinking 10-12,000shp, being based on early Olympus models. It'd put the design somewhere between the C-133 and An-22 in terms of performance and payload.

This would be a useful aircraft. However, I think that Rolls Royce would recycle a Bristol name for naming the turboprop Olympus.

Well in this particular scenario, one of the differences to the timeline is that the UK government prevented the Rolls Royce buyout of Bristol Siddeley on competition grounds, meaning that there were still two major aero engine manufacturers.

The Reggiane Re.2006 was originally supposed to have a four bladed propeller, but VDM, the chosen propeller maker, couldn't make a four bladed propeller so the team making the Re.2006 was forced to use a three bladed propeller. These drawings explore what if the Re.2006 had a four bladed propeller, and what if the Re.2006 went into service.
