Invincible Class Escort Cruiser

The Escort Cruiser had been in development since the 1960s and many design studies had been made when the decision was made to postpone the construction until after the CVA carriers had been completed. The 1966 Study 22 was taken as the basis for future design work, the main change being the switch to an all-gas turbine powerplant. The Command Cruiser was not immediately justifiable and indeed by 1970 the Treasury were pushing for the cancellation. However, the need to maintain the Sea King fleet at sea (each Type 82 could carry two but not maintain fully for long deployments) and the need to strengthen the air-defences of the Carrier Group enabled the Navy to get approval for two Escort Cruisers (as the type was renamed due to its full weapons capability against air, surface and submarine targets. A third ship was wanted but with pressing manpower and economic constraints this was not possible. Both ships commissioned at the end of the 1970s and were given two major updates in the 1980s to modernise their defensive systems.

The class also had a secondary Commando Carrier role with some hangar space given over to vehicles and additional bunks for soliders and vehicle stowage on the flight deck.

Ooooh, very interesting and attractive. The AU Merlin is a dead sexy bird.

I wonder about the feasibility of performing substantial helo maintenance on another ship. I also wonder about reloading box launchers from a magazine at sea. Six total isn't very many, but six ready-use is probably plenty.

The WG.34 was a sleek looking helicopter, it formed the basis of the EH101 Merlin (see my forthcoming book for details ;) ). In this AU it gets developed as a national project.

I made a typo with the boxes, should have been 8 rather than 6.
I had thought about an Ikara launcher aft, like the early CVA-01 studies but the magazine takes up at least 45ft of beam and on an 82ft beam ship its just impossible without eating up the hangar.

A crazy idea would be to ditch the boxes and have the Sea Dart and Ikara launchers side-by-side, but slightly staggered, in the bows and the magazines laid out with Ikara mag in an 'L' shape with the Sea Dart mag nestled on the inside to form the rectangle. Its a huge target and probably quite vulnerable, but I'd like your view on how practical that might be.
