Hi,

in this thread, I'll try to show some of the evolutions of the Scharnhorst-class design history.

I. Panzerschiff "D" Entwurf (design) 3b

Panzerschiffe D&E were intended to be improvements of the famous Deutschland-class "Pocket-battleships".

It was deemed necessary to uparmour the new generation of Panzerschiffe and thus the displacement of the new design grew to araound 19.000 tons.

The ships would have been similarly armed to the preceding ships, though eight 28cm main guns were considered, had there been a quadruple turret design available.
The main difference was that the 15cm guns were placed in armoured twin turrets, rather than in single mounts. Flak-armament was also increased with the intent to equip her with
ten, instead of six 8,8cm guns.

Interestingly, the new Panzerschiffe would have been propelled by turbines insted of Diesel-engines. Limiting their range and use as commerce-raiders compared to their predecessors.

One of the two ships was laid down, but was canceled less than five months after the keel was laid down.
The design was changed into what later became the Scharnhorst-class battleship.

Great work Maomatic.

With the Scharnhorst designs, why would they go back to a mix of twin and single 5.9" when three sets of four twin 5.9" would have been ordered for 'Ersatz Elsass' and its sisterships? I always thought it was a step backwards.

Hi,

thank you all for the kind replies!

@Krakatoa:

As far as I know, only eight 15cm twin turrets Drh LC/34 were ordered by that time. Also, all design proposals for D "Ersatz Elsass" (=Scharnhorst) and E "Ersatz Hessen" (=Gneisenau) were intended to be equipped with only four such turrets each.

It seems, that the addition of the single mounts on the final design was a "last minute" decision to bolster the secondary armament.

cheers!

Excellent work.
I've always wondered when the Panzerschiff D & E would get the full Maomatic treatment!

Interesting design, the two smaller rangefinders at the front look weird to me in the way that there is two of them. I can see how they ended up with the Scharnhorst class. Excellently drawn as usual.

Hi,

since my last post was ages ago, I decided to finish one of my WIP's and share it with you:

II. Neuentwurf II ("Redesign II")

As a reaction to the new French Dunkerque class battleships, it was decided to stop the construction of the "Design 3b" Panzerschiff successors.
Erich Raeder, Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, proposed to increase the new designs' defensive and offensive capabilities - especially by adding a third turret.
Initially, Hitler only agreed to increase the designs armour protection, but refused to permit an increase in armament. Finally, by February 1934, Hitler agreed to the addition of a third turret.

The "Neuentwurf II" was one of two alternative designs that were submitted to Admiral Raeder, but was quickly discarded in favour of the more powerful "Neuentwurf I".
