Experimental Training Carrier Svalinn

Converted from a liner built in 1904, Svalinn was built in response to the requirement to convert Dagr and Nótt to carriers, as the KNF had no prior experience with carrier aviation.

She was designed with aid from the USN, and was the simplest possible conversion as to expedite the process so that pilots could be trained prior to the commissioning of the larger carriers. She had a single open hangar deck spanning most of her length, with a single elevator up to a straight flight deck. She was capable of cruising at 14.8 knots and was armed with only four 88mms for saluting.

She carried twenty Boeing FBs bought from the US Navy, still wearing their Navy peacetime silver and yellow.

Starting life as the final two hulls of the Skinfaxi class, Geirdriful and Gungnir were re-ordered as fleet carriers upon the signing of the Washington Naval Treaty. They had both been built up to the stage of having a near complete hull and belt armor, but had not yet had their barbettes installed.

Both ships received new machinery, two hangar decks, and three flight decks. Gungnir received a slightly different conversion, fixing certain errors in Geirdriful's design. The triple flight deck design was a result of the KNF's doctrine of a highly mobile fleet with emphasis on speed and hit and run attacks, with the designers searching for ways to speed up the deployment of aircraft. The search of speed in flight operations also resulted in the ships receiving hangar catapults, with Geirdriful getting three per side and Gungnir getting two per side.

Each ship was capable of 29 knots, had 12" belt plating, and carried 98 aircraft. Their complement of aircraft consisted of Martin T3Ms in the strike role, and re-engined Boeing FBs designated as V1s.

Geirdriful had an armament in addition to her planes, of eight 6" casemate guns, 22 88mm guns, and 26 13.2mm machineguns.

Gungnir had an armament of eight 6" casemate guns, 22 88mm guns, and eighteen 13.2mm machineguns.

Berg-class Heavy Cruisers

As was standard for ships of the Konugeligt Nyrdanske Floti, the Berg-class cruisers were designed with ice strengthened hulls, and like the other cruisers, icebreaker bows. Ships in the class were named for towns, giving the class as a whole the name name Berg, "Town".

With a speed of 30 knots they were slower than their Japanese counterparts, the Furutakas and Aobas, though had a stronger hull and less issues with stability. Their main battery consisted of eight 203mm guns in twin turrets, and her secondary armament was ten 88mm guns, also in twin mounts. She carried four triple torpedo launchers amidships, and had four stern mine/depth bomb rails. She had a midships hangar straddling the fore funnel which held two disassembled Goshawk floatplanes.

During the second world war, ships of this class gained fame as tough and valiant fighters, most notably Proniemi, which stood alone against ten Japanese destroyers and yet still came out on top.

Kappi-class Light Cruisers

Largely an incremental improvement over the Björns, the Kappi-class retained the same armament, machinery, and general hullform. They were designed with superior electronics, rangefinders, and directors. The machinery ventilation was changed to the design common on KNF vessels of the later 1920s, and her superstructure was updated. Possibly the most notable change to the design was the addition of an aft hangar capable of storing a single disassembled Goshawk. They were capable of 35 knots and carried an armament of eight 152mm guns, eight 88mm guns, and four twin torpedo launchers. As with the Björn-class, they also carried two stern mine/depth bomb ramps.

They served with the same distinction as the Björns, although were often overshadowed in historical texts by their predecessors.

Following the large-scale inclusion of motor torpedo boats into the fleet, the admiralty envisioned a class of larger torpedo boats that would serve as command vessels for the squadrons. This ultimately resulted in the F-1920-class boats. Armed with two 88mm guns and six torpedo tubes, two of which were in fixed mounts inside the bow, along with stern mine/depth bomb ramps, they boasted quite a lot of firepower for their size. They were powered by small steam turbines, giving them a top speed of 34 knots.

The final five hulls were extended by 3 meters to facilitate the addition of a hydrophone and its operating room.

Despite being obsolete by at least decade and suffering from serious issues with spray and deck wash, they managed to rack up a number of kills during WW2.

The F-1922-class was the KNF's first class of destroyer equipped with complete anti-submarine equipment as designed, equipped with hydrophones and carrying depth bomb racks and launchers. They could reach a speed of 35 knots and carried an additional armament of three 4" guns and four twin torpedo launchers.

The aftmost gun mount suffered from deck wash, and the vessel was extremely cramped. They had been mothballed in the 1930s but were brought back into service for convoy duties during WW2.

The F-1924s were built to the same pattern as the 1922s, but had an enlarged hull which facilitated the addition of a second midships 4" gun. They were also less cramped and the aftmost gun mount was elevated to prevent it from being awash when the ship was in motion. They were capable of reaching 36 knots in calm seas, though like her contemporaries, this was rarely achieved.

Unlike their predecessors, these vessels were still in service through the 1930s and were among the first vessels to see combat in the Pacific War.

The F-1926-class was designed as a dedicated destroyer flotilla leader, and was based on the F-1924 hull. The design was lengthened and given newer machinery, allowing the vessels to reach speeds of over 37 knots in calm sea states. Compared to F-1924, they carried an additional 4" gun in an aft mounting, and had improved torpedo launchers. They also were the first destroyers in the fleet to be equipped with fire control directors. The additions that stood out the most were the comparably immense suites of radio equipment, and the two-level bridge, giving the flotilla command crew a separate space.

The last five hulls were also equipped with a more advanced hydrophone system, a sort of stepping stone between hydrophones and proper SONAR.

By World War 2 they had largely fallen out of use as flotilla leaders, having been replaced by light cruisers and more modern DL designs, though they still saw limited service in their intended role. They were mostly used as regular DDs during the war, though unsuitable for the role compared to modern destroyers.

Kastali-class Heavy Cruisers

A subclass of the Berg-class, the Kastali-class was largely identical internally, the major changes to the design were the removal of the battery-based backup propulsion in favor of a bank of gasoline generators, the addition of a second bridge level, improved radio gear, improved turret rangefinders, and an additional eight 13.2mm machineguns in gun tubs on top of the superfiring turrets.

These changes reduced their speed to 29.6 kts, making them among the slowest heavy cruisers in the world.

Both ships of the class had extraordinarily bad luck over their service careers, being involved in several training incidents, including one in 1932 in which Hojhall collided with the light cruiser Kiste, necessitating the complete replacement of the CL's bow. Both of the ships in the class were superstitiously regarded as "Cursed", and were lost early in the Pacific War.
