Nice work, very interesting history, not a lucky ship at all (not surprising with that name: in Barcelona the ramparts of Castillo de Montjuich were a traditional place for executions).

Not lucky indeed, and too bad since that's an impressive rebuild.
I'm glad Novice's back to it, this is an excellent thread.

And here is another ship from Spain. Built as yard number 1 at the Sestao, Spanish Naval yard, the ship was the third to be named Alfonso XIII for the Compania Trasatlantica Espanola, with a service between Spain, to New York and onward to Cuba.

With the creation of Republican Spain several ships were renamed, in order to remove any royal names, the Alfonso XIII being renamed Habana. In 1939 the ship suffered a fire which caused her to be rebuilt as a cargo ship, all passenger accommodations being removed. The work was completed in 1943.

In 1947 the ship had passenger accommodation being added and was finally sent for breaking up in 1962.

Great stuff on the HABANA, Novice! In fact, the HABANA wasn't scrapped in 1962. She escaped the scrapper's torch and was rebuilt as the fish factory ship GALICIA. She wasn't scrapped until 1978: http://hadebarcos.blogspot.nl/2013/01/e ... o-por.html
