I've searched the site and couldn't find any previous drawings of the South Dakota. If I've missed it please accept my apologies and I'll put the thread, other wise here is the lead ship of her class, the USS South Dakota (BB-57).

I keep forgetting how small South Dakato is compared to Iowa, with close to similar armament!

Midnightnova (I think) drew it long ago, but it was certainly not up to this standard. Beautiful drawing.

I think the underwater part of the stern could use a little work, though. I think the inner screws were forward of the outer screws, and the latter arguably ought to be visible in the top view.

You are correct. I searched the web in vane for a photo like the one you've provided but couldn't find one, thanks I'll fix it.

1) Your 1942 AA suit is completely WRONG
- by spring 1942 only 6 quadruple 28mm, 16 single 20mm & 8x0,5"MG
- by september 1942 only 4 quadruple 40mm, 5 quadruple 28mm, 36 single 20mm

2) Your drawing beam/width look wrong & too large (south-dakota have a maximum beam of 32,94 meters)

Anti-aircraft battery

The ships [of the South Dakota-Class] had a variety of anti-aircraft weapons, and the weapons mounted changed over time. Initially, the ships were designed to mount twelve .50 in (12.7 mm) and twelve 1.1 in (27.9 mm) machine guns. By March 1942, when South Dakota was completed, the anti-aircraft battery was modified to eight .50 in (12.7 mm) and twenty-eight 1.1 in (27.9 mm) machine guns and sixteen 20mm Oerlikon autocannon. In September of that year, the .50 in (12.7 mm) guns were removed and the number of 1.1 in (27.9 mm) guns reduced to 20. In their place, the 20mm guns were increased to 16 weapons, and 16 Bofors 40mm guns were added, in four quadruple mounts.[13]
In February 1943, the 1.1 in (27.9 mm) guns and one 20mm gun were replaced with an additional 52 40mm guns, for a total of 68. In December 1944, the battery was again upgraded, with 72 20mm and 72 Bofors. In March 1945, the battery was modified for the last time: five 20mm were added and four 40mm removed. This provided the maximum number of anti-aircraft guns, at 145 guns. The other three ships followed a similar pattern of upgrades to the anti-aircraft armament.[13]

Do not blindly follow the books (even the best known)
on a photo of south dakota on July 22, 1942, I count even 7 quadruple 28mm...

PS: your drawing look more a 35 meters than 32+ meters beam

Cool, though I'd be worried by what colombamike points out. Some of your plan views have had scaling issues in the past so it might be worthwhile to check and recheck. Scaling issues seem to be the number one problem with drawings these days!

It would also help if you defined a month for the depiction. "1942" is very broad and can encompass several camouflages and AA configs.

Thanks for the effort David, it is much appreciated as this class got neglected somehow.

If you allow me to join the critical side:

This is the 1944 version of the ship, neither the AA nor the electronics or the mainmast is correct for 1942. Also BB-57 never wore Ms 22, it had Ms 12 mod. for a short period and it was mostly Ms 21 throughout the war, but I haven't seen any photo of her in Ms 22.

Also as the gents pointed out above the plan view seems out of proportion and I'm not happy with the shape of he hull there either. Which drawing did you use as reference for the plan view?

Finally part of the blades of the inner propellers should be visible under the outer screw's skegs.
