In USN practice, yes, this is how mounts are numbered. The first digit is the caliber in inches, the second digit counts upward from the bow (if there are beam mounts, odd numbers starboard, even numbers port).

For main battery turrets on battleships (and maybe cruisers?), I think they're just turret 1, turret 2, turret 3, but I'm less sure on this.

What a marvelous set of Destroyers, you keep delighting us with well drawn ships and informative accompaining texts.

Yes - erik_t explained it perfectly. The horizontal grey lines on those gun mounts are stiffeners added to some of the 5" mounts, depending on the building yard and time of refit. Some ships have them and some don't. The pattern used also varied a bit between ships, and each side of the gunhouse was different (likely due to the different sighting arrangement on the port side of the gun mount). I've only seen them fixed to the forward gun mounts, and often times only mount 51 (I suspect this was to strengthen the mount shield in heavy weather). See below:

Have you noticed if Atlantic units tended to feature these stiffeners more often than Pacific units? Though the latter's name is sometimes a misnomer, that would strengthen the conclusion.

Excellent thread as usual, and we have come to expect. The only downside is that this thread is closed, as you pointed, and here I was hoping for the DMs like Aaron Ward (DM-34 formerly DD-773)

This is TAUSSIG (DD-746) as commissioned in May of 1944, with the striking Measure 31/9D camouflage. TAUSSIG retained this camouflage even after her August of 1944 refit which rebuilt the ship's bridge into the later open version.

Re: stiffeners, I haven't delved deep enough into this specific issue to notice any difference. To me it seems like the stiffeners are a late-war innovation, so likely a fix that one of the building yards invented and then BuShips or BuC&R sent to all the rest of the yards to implement in refits or new built ships. Interestingly not all of the GEARING class are fitted with them so who knows - it's probably an issue like the barrel bloomers, for which many different solutions were tried but nothing was really satisfactory, and the end of the war took away a lot of the focus and priority from this sort of issue. But I am not the expert here - possibly a question for the researchers on the ModelWarships forum.
