Just when you thought the image hosts were against you it seems Microsoft have decided to throw a spanner in the works too!

It seems quite soon MS Paint will be no more, the Fall Creators upgrade will make Paint a deprecated programme, so while it might not be removed now, it may be in a future update.

That is why I've used paint.net for a while now. You can download it from their website. I've been using it to stitch together book cover scans for a while now.

GIMP is also a legally free option on all modern operating systems.

I know some folks intentionally shy away from full(er)-featured software suites of this form, but maybe it's time to learn ;)

I know the number of tool options can be daunting, and the default setup is not really well-suited for Shipbucket use. For this reason, I will be putting together a "GIMP lite" user profile that folks can download and apply to their install. This will hide all of the more confusing and less useful tools (although not remove them), which might help to ease the transition for our more stodgy users.

I'll try to get to that this week.

That would be really good, actually. I've been meaning to make a tutorial on proper use of Photoshop for drawings as part of the new site rollout, and it would be great if we could have similar packaged tutorials for GIMP and PDN as well. A downloadable user profile for both would be even better.

Re: Paint not being available, can't you just download the old paint.exe from somewhere online and use that? A casual google search reveals this: http://downloads.informer.com/paint-xp/1.1/

I haven't used Paint in years, so not sure... but maybe something to explore.

It's not clear that Paint will ever actually be removed, only that it will not receive any developer time or support. Windows has a number of other utilities that have been deprecated for years but are still shipped.

I use KolourPaint, which has a similar interface to MS Paint but with additional features such as transparency support and more undo/redo levels. However, it is only available for GNU/Linux systems.

I had downloaded the XP MS Paint, and use it on 64-bit windows 8 and windows 10. The announcement by Microsoft means only that they don't support MS Paint. It is still usable, and till it dies completely, I'll use that (it is quite difficult to teach an old dog new tricks...)

Now that I've got the latest version of paint figured out....I'll use it till it's done.

Wish I still had Corel Draw. My old version won't work on Win10 and I don't have a few hundred to burn. The Student version doesn't like DWG so that's no good to me.

Seems Microsoft are now back-peddling and have reprieved Paint.

I have read Microsoft developer program... For those that use developer Version of Windows 10.

That said from day 1 that MS paint is not coming to be automatically installed as one of the Windows program. But is moved over to the Windows Store. Eventual all windows program's even notepad will be moved to the Store. This is due to that everybody can install those programs they want, and not get forced on them random programs that they are not using.

MS paint is not gone, it is in the Windows Store
