That said, having a containerized hospital module for the LCS wouldn't be a bad idea.
Anyway, if I were to convert an amphib to a hospital ship I'd start out with something akin to an Austin Class LPD.
It's got room for six Ch-46 Sea Knight helicopters and it should be possible to squeeze in some 300 hospital beds plus assorted surgery suites and such once you've reduced the manning to something approaching civilian levels and removed all the marines and their gear.

My apologies for gravedigging a really old topic, particuarly my own, but I could use some help/opinions and I really didn't want to create a new topic on the same subject which is about LHD hospital ships.

I am well on my way to creating a "what if" LHD hospital ship in 1/350 scale which is converted from a Gallery Models USS WASP kit.

MY MAIN QUESTIONS ARE:
I don't know anything when it comes to sensors, radars, and electronics. In the following pages/pics, I'm not sure what Part #'s to keep vs. what Part #'s not to use? Combat systems are a no brainer. For example, I wouldn't need Part #'s J2, J62, and C10 on Page 28.
But what else? What to keep vs. what to get rid of? For those that are more familiar with radar and sensor systems, what would you suggest I have?

This looks like a neat project!

Things I'd expect to remove:
  • Agreed on J2 complex
  • C17 complex is RAM, and the Sea Sparrow box launcher behind it
  • C42 complex is SLQ-32
  • My inclination would be to leave basically all comms, but that's a tricky subject.
  • Both air search sets and their platforms
  • The A75 complex, which is an approach radar for Harriers and such. Mayyybe keep it for V-22?
I would likely fab a few cute little navigation radar bar antennas, and keep SPS-10's antenna and declare it to be SPS-65.

SPS-58/65

L-band pulse-doppler air search target acquisition radar to work with the Point Defense Missile System. It was developed at high priority after the sinking of the Israeli destroyer Eilat by Egyptian 'Styx' missiles in 1967, and was reportedly patterned on a West German Siemens radar with excellent anitclutter capabilities. That was probably the MPDR-45, one of a series of Mobile Pulse Doppler Radars, with a 4.4° x 11° cosecant-squared beam to 40° in elevation and scanning at 19rpm. Throughout the desig the emphasis was on simplicity and low cost, in contrast to the Hughes Target Acquisition System. Construction is modular for maximum standardization, with two alternative antennas: a large stabilized, 16ft, horn-fed ellipse and a lightweight antenna, essentially SPS-10 with a dual feed permitting duplex operation. SPS-58 and -58B use the large antenna, the latter having no display but rather feeding directly into NTDS; -58A and -58C are analogous systems duplexing with SPS-10. There is also a new 9ft 6in planar array antenna. MTI is used to exclude clutter, and improvements in that direction continue to be made. Current production versions are designated SPS-65. Already leaving those off. ;)

You mean keep all the round "domes"?

Remove or keep?

I do plan to have V-22's on the flight deck as well as lots of helicopters.

Whoops, that formatting didn't work.

Yes, keep all domes, because a hospital ship might find use in being able to transmit and receive lots of imagery with doctors stateside. Remove the stuff on page 29.

Ok, after reviewing the instruction pages again as well as doing various research, I've come up with the following. Let me know what you think. I'll keep all the round "dome" comms, but may put them in different areas/positions on the ship.

Page 28

REMOVE:
J2, J62, C10, C17, RAM & Seasparrow launchers, Phalanx CIWS, C42, C43, C44, J16, J78, J42, J91, J82, K91,

KEEP OR UNDECIDED:
A83, C60, J9, J33, J17, J38+J44, A40

Page 29

REMOVE:
SPS-48 radar (A23, A58, A72, A13)

KEEP OR UNDECIDED:
SPS-49 radar (A14, A22, )
J4, J5, J6
J79, J80, J81, J90

Page 30

REMOVE:
C9, C10, A16,

KEEP OR UNDECIDED:
SPN-43 radar (A56, A73, A74, A75)
A85
A50 + A76
A77 + A78

Sorry for gravedigging my own topic again. I just want to say that I did finish this project and wanted to come back here and post the results to share with others. You can read Post #'s 236 and 238 here on Page 16:
