Since Colo love opening old post...

Have updated the drawing, after the latest 3D pictures that have come out, with soma small changes.

[ img ]

It have been decided to build 3 vessel of this class, instead of a to various class.

6 shipyards have been qualified for the contract, they have to send in their "suggestion and price" early this year, the shipyards are:

Westcon Yards AS
Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted AS
Havyard Ship Technology AS
Ulstein Verft AS
Kleven Maritime AS
Vard Langsten AS

My favorite is "Kleven Maritime AS" and "Havyard Ship Technology AS", due to their know how, but "Ulstein" are also a big one.

The timeplan for the project is:

Negotiations with shipyards (2017)
Parliamentary negotiations (spring 2018)
Contract award (2018)
Detailed Design (2018 - 2019)
Construction (2019 - 2024)
Test (Autumn 2021)
Delivery first vessel (2022)

SPECIFICATION NEW coastguard vessels:

Length: 136.4 meters
Width: 19 meters
Draught: 6.2 meters
Displacement: 9,800 tons
Steel Weight: 4,500 tons
Speed: Minimum 22 knots
Seaworthiness: Safe to perform operations, inclusive seastate 5
Ice Class: ICE-1A * F (Extreme ice conditions, 1 meter of ice, can to some extent work without help of an icebreaker)
Winterization: Winterized Polar (-30)
Progress: Diesel Electric
Endurance: 8 weeks without supply
Berth Capacity: 100 people
Container Capacity on deck
Hangar Space: 2 x NH 90
Helideck: Can take down AW 101-size
Two rescue boats

There's a lot of talks in media from "so called experts", that are criticizing the project for not using the Norwegian Engineer power and know how and design something totally new for the future, they are saying that the project is purposely avoiding new technology.... After my understanding they are doing it this way, because the Navy only want proven technology, that are ready for action tomorrow, not in 10-14 years!

Looks a big ship for a coast guard vessel, very impressive.
Whatever the critics say its probably better than some other nations could manage at the moment (I'm thinking the UK!).

There really is only one criteria - will it do the job it is to be built for? If answer is 'yes' then there is no problem.

Other roles will be found for them after they are built. Having only 'proven' technology aboard is a good thing - the ship will be cheaper and easier to service.

It odd the boats aren't behind doors the rough enviroment the ships will operate in taken into account.

I presume the big one will be behind the door, but not the small one, mostly due to placement.

Hi Heuhen, good afternoon.
May I ask the reason of the 5 (or more?) fire hoses in the OPV? Are they planed as a deterret (as a non lethal «weapon») for piracy off Somalia / Gulf of Aden area? Thanks and cheers.
