No I don't think there is a strict shadow convention, go with what looks best and reflects the shape of the wing, try and compare with some photographs showing the shadow if you can.

Thanks, Hood. I`d been looking the shadow of the high wing drawings here and it is placed between 30 and 45 degrees from the vertical. In photographs the variation is greater. I will try to mimic the style of a veteran! (being a copycat is the best praise for the ingenuity of the copied artist , it is not plagiarism! ).

Tanks for the comments, guess I'll drop the bomb then . I don't like the A380.
That's of course from the mere aestethyc point of view, deniying or not recognizing what that behemoth is in terms of technology, developement, space and cabin confort would be just plain stupid and foul. I just miss when airliners were functional beauties and not just functional.
I'm considering about adding RR powered 767 as well (like the P&W case the powerplants were in common with the 747) so I'll do it. Might do joint sheets as well if you are ok with it?


Anyway, I've finally finished the Rolls-Royce engines for the 747-400, and so here is the first joint sheet for that particular 747 model. It comprises all versions (-400, -400ER, -400D, -400BCF, -400F and -400ERF) and all powerplants (P&W, GE and RR) suitably labeled. Passenger and former passenger models are shown gear up, pure freighters gear down.

And that's the 747-8in a single sheet as well. Labeled, with passenger version gear up and freighter gear down.


Once I'm done with the last engines (the earlier RR engines for the classic 747s) all other versions will come in joint sheets as well.

Meanwhile I've finally wrapped up the remaining Rolls-Royce engines and collected the other 747s in large sheets. I'm also reposting the 747-400 sheet in light of a few late modifications (removed door markings from the BCFs, added the -400M and -F models on some labels from which they were missing).

Nice collection of B747. Olympic Airways (real) had the B747-284B with the P&W JT9D-7 engine, delivered in 1972-73.

There is no particularly specific convention about wing shadows. Generally the FD style is derived from SB style, where the sun ("the source of light") is somewhere above and forward of the bow/nose - or in other words: in the general direction of the upper-right corner of the screen. Therefore customarily the shadow is "going backwards", but not at any specific angle.
Personally, on the aircraft on stright-ish wings (meaning that, say DH.82 wings count as "straight") I make the angle approximately 30 degree (2 pixels down - 1 pixel left), whereas on the ones with clearly swept wings (or delta) I make it 45 degree (for the leading edge - as for the trailing it would depend - for a wing like on F-86 it would be also 45, but for delta like Mirage it would be 30), but that's nothing set in stone.
