You are right and wrong. Between 1919 and 1933 the German flag was black, red and gold. But the flag of the merchant marine was indeed black, white and red with a small black, red and gold one in the upper left corner.
I think this one would bee the propper one shown.

Novice - I'll try to find some good images of the rudder and propellers and revise the drawing accordingly.

Novice and Cascadia - The national flag of the Weimar Republic was black, red, and gold until the Nazis took power. The military and the merchant marine used black, white, and red as their ensigns, but the official flag of Germany was the black, red, and gold.
