AND THEN THERE WAS ZENITH STAR

2 MW continuous wave infrared(?) space-based laser.

Forms the backbone of Gallo-Varnian orbital defense network protecting against ASATs and high altitude TBMs. Its primary mission is offensive though, since it is intended to destroy communications and GNSS satellites during wartime, freeing aircraft, warships, and other terrestrial based launchers from that role.

First three pairs of Block 1 SIVs deployed between 2012-2015. The Zenith Star constellation became IOC with the Gallan Space Command in 2016 and Varnian Navy in 2015. Block 2 SIVs will feature a protective housing for the mirror face, a new mirror assembly with a separate optical targeting system, and improved electronics over the 1980s-vintage of the Block 1s, with initial launches planned for 2019-2020. The Block 2 SIVs will be deployed two at a time in a SLV, because they comprise only the front portion of the spacecraft.

Countermeasures include aforementioned ~battle laser~, infrared decoys, chaff, and a substantial maneuvering capability. Future countermeasures will probably be a constellation of DSATs/suicide satellites for self-protection, and radar decoys, but that's not expected until the mid-2030s.

The Gallan Celestial Control Command Computer uses a quartet of Gala-2 supercomputers to process radar information, using the Royal Gallan Navy's Kvikkalkul computer language as the basis. The Varnian Navy equivalent uses a rack of COTS Gallan Business Machines Sail servers, running a militarized version of the GBM Blue Cap operating system.

Before anyone asks:

Zenith Star got quite far in development. It was being funded until at least ~1996, after Martin Marietta became Lockheed-Martin, although I think the Barbarian SLV died sometime before that. They (Martin Marietta/Lockheed-Martin) were still planning to launch ZS until the late 1990s or early 2000s. If it'd finished (~$250 or $350 mn/year was needed/desired) it would be in service by now, probably just barely, since the timeline projected an IOC with the USAF in 2012 or 2013.

IIRC the major stumbling block was the ABM Treaty and associated legal hurdles, not the actual technology, since weaponized lasers were pretty sedate in the 1980s as far as stuff goes (futuristic, but perfectly feasible, they were only super sci-fi in the '60s).

The USAF thought it would be able to shoot down Scud missiles in Desert Storm which is where I got the TBM part, and Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin thought they would be able to skirt by the ABM Treaty by saying it was an anti-satellite laser rather than a ABM one, but Alpha Laser was a more powerful laser weapon than was allowed under the ABM Treaty or something by about two orders of magnitude. Then Peace Broke Out and ZS was put on the back burner by the Bush administration, and taken behind the shed by Clinton in his 2nd term. The other laser programs like ABL chugged along because of ~rogue states~ like North Korea/Iran, but Zenith Star would probably be fine for those IRL.

It might be resurrected by BMDO if they get an injection of Big Money in 2021 when the Budget Control Act lifts, but then the USAF won't have Space Battle Lasers until the 2030s or 2040s, and everyone except maybe the PM Office and a few spergy engineers will fail to realize that the USAF could have had them 10-20 years prior.

ikv 104 is the "pbv 2511" with a Stryker MGS turret for maximum psychic agony
