Continuing to move backwards in the history of US Army uniforms:
Union and Confederate Armies 1861-1865

[ img ]
first line (Union): lieutenant general undress, brigadier general full dress, colonel of infantry full dress, captain of artillery full dress, major of cavalry full dress, lieutenant colonel of the medical corps officers overcoat with staff trousers
second line (Union): sergeant major of artillery full dress, sergeant of infantry full dress, private of infantry fatigue marching order, corporal of cavalry full dress, private of light artillery full dress, great coat for all mounted men
third line (Confederate): general, colonel of infantry, colonel of engineers, major of cavalry, surgeon major of the medical department, captain of artillery
fourth line (Confederate): first lieutenant of infantry, sergeant of cavalry, corporal of artillery, private of infantry, infantryman with overcoat, cavalry trooper with overcoat

*As I understand it, many of the Confederate uniforms displayed here (especially for the lower ranks) are only theoretical as the Confederate government never had the resources to procure standard uniforms for the entirety of the army and officers purchased their own uniforms. As you can imagine, they were quite a ragtag looking bunch, but they fought very well nonetheless.

These are fantastic! It's great to see the evolution of the uniforms through the years.

Thanks Rowdy! I thought it would be an interesting exercise.

Union and Confederate Navies 1861-1865

[ img ]
first line (Union): officer winter, officer summer, seaman winter, seaman summer
second line (Confederate): officer winter, officer summer, seaman winter, seaman summer

*Due to the lack of many sources on Civil War naval uniforms (especially from the South), the lack of centralization in the Confederate navy (many states even formed their own naval forces), and the lack of resources to procure standardized uniforms, most of the uniforms used were either civilian clothes or old US navy uniforms. So, as in the army uniforms, I drew a Confederate uniform that was somewhat theoretical, in that, if the South had remained independent, these would have been its navy's uniforms, and, indeed, they were used by some officers during the war.

I felt like a bit of a change of pace after doing so many American uniforms.
