Traditional alpine boot is something like the Meindl Perfekt, but most of the famous italian and german (and also some French) manufaturer of alpine boots (like Meindl, Lowa, Scarpa, Garmont etc.) produce still such boots although this kind of shoes are not any more as popular as they were the past (they are quite expensive, stiffer and heavier then shoes people use to wear today). Often - even in germany and italy - a type of leather is used for this kind of shoe which is called "swiss military leather and which is very sturdy and stiff.

Some armies as the italian, the swiss, the german and the french uses or used military variants of alpine boots:

This shoe was not much loved by many young recruits not used to wear heavy and stiff footwear, on the other hand it was very popular and could be seen very often worn by farmers, lumbermen, construction workers and so on.

The swiss army in introducing at the moment a new shoe:

All swiss troops deployed in the mountains are also equiped with a shell shoe. The shell is from hard plastic.
