T50 type Destroyer.

Classed as Fleet Torpedo Boats, these ships were equivalent to the British Q-Ca class destroyers. Where the British built 80+, the Germans built 5. Bombing was the main cause for the low completion rate of the German built units, while sabotage was the main culprit for the problems encountered in the occupied countries building yards. The best completion rate of all were the Spanish ships of which four out of four were completed. Twelve units were laid down in Germany during 1940-41. Four were cancelled during 1942 while of the last eight only 5 being completed, the others falling foul of Allied bombing, either directly with terminal damage or by the parts for the ships being damaged beyond repair and required replacement bits and pieces being re-ordered and re-built.

Two sets of plans were produced. A simpler ship with four of the older model open 5", which were to be built in the occupied countries and Spain, while a much more upmarket version with radar control for the twin 5" were to be built in German yards.

Lyonesse Class Anti-Aircraft Cruiser.

These cruisers were designed and built to escort the large carriers Graf Zeppelin and Peter Strasser. Originally to have been a class of eight ships, cancellations and air-raid delays left only 2 ships that were completed in 1944. One uncompleted unit became a French war prize, the other undamaged hull was seized by the Russians.

By 1944 the German Radar systems had caught up to if not surpassed the Allied systems. The Lyonesse was completed with a full suite of radar for air and sea duties. The main armament was the same 5" twin that had been in service since 1935. The radar outfit slaved to these weapons made their accuracy phenomenal. For the first time a full set of 55mm Geraat Auto AA weapons were fitted to a German ship after trials on the Goeben. This was one of the main reasons the Lyonesse type were much bigger than the UK Dido and US Atlanta equivalents. The 55mm guns went through their ammunition at such a prodigious rate that huge magazine stowage of the endless belts was required.

This is the ship class the Germans needed at North Cape to blast through the British destroyer screen. These ships were destroyer killers.

(I have used an Austrian word for the class and it is also from a series of books by Jack Vance that I like, so while not strictly German it is of Germanic origin, much like Prinz Eugen.)

A German Atlanta! I like it.

One the T-50 Class are you sure those quad 20mm just behind the forefunnel have decent enough arcs to be worthwhile? They seem very hemmed in by the twin 37mm tub outboard and the director directly behind them on the centreline.

Thanks for the kind words Hood and Emperor Andreas.

Hood the T50 forefunnel is taken directly from Gollys Type 36A. That is how the layout is on there. I would think it has 80-90 degree coverage before it would impact on the 37's. I use the 'director' as the torpedo director while the radar and other directors run the guns.

Hi K,

I'd thought that without working out how to make cavity magnetrons (the Germans, unaware of this invention, used klystrons throughout the war, limiting them to longer wavelengths and lower transmitted power) that Axis radars simply could not be as good as Allied stuff once centimetric radar was developed in late 1941. Do the Axis powers develop a similar thing themselves (or recover it from crashed aircraft, etc, etc) in this AU?

(Asking partly because NSWE run into the exact same problem and have to have much bigger radar installations for an equivalent power than Allied ships would, both in terms of the size of the electrical equipment and requiring bigger antennae to focus the (weaker) signal more tightly)

Howdy Adam,

I believe the Germany Navies of many AU's captured an Allied destroyer/frigate sized ship in the Mediterranean and was able to secure the radar installation for reverse engineering which by 1944 the Germans had caught up to or even surpassed the Allies.

How does that sound Adam?

(NSWE's battles mostly being over water, they don't retrieve any during the war - but do get intel from the Germans - just relying on the massive electrical power available from the electric drive system, whopping great klystrons and antennae to match)
