first part of the first version of the new storyline. it is an lengthened and improved and restarted version of the original background story.

In February 1970, the USSR and the USA signed a treaty. This treaty limited the amounts of new produced nuclear weapons. New nuclear weapons were only allowed to be build to replace others, and the replaced ones should be scrapped. The consequence of this was, that the nuclear arsenals no longer grew in numbers, but they grew in power all the same, because both sides made more powerful bombs. In 1985 there was an new treaty: these new arsenals were too powerful to ever be used. Glad they agreed on this, this started to put an end to the arms race. The hostility’s weren’t over, though, and in 1990 the war almost broke out. But an unexpected enemy struck first: money. Both countries were on the edge of bankruptcy because of the arms race, and when the first American bank fell down the army’s were the first to be disposed off. while both the eastern and western side tried to get their economy on rails again, large numbers of weapons, vehicles, aircraft and ships were scrapped or sold.
Many people were blamed for this. Military leaders, aristocrats, banks, the militaries in general….. all were hated for the cold war and the economical crisis. Most of these people blamed this on money and the state, and they were partially right about that, but they were still hated by the people of their countries. Many of them decided to leave, and to never again live the way they did before, occupied with the money and power.
A Dutch millionaire, who never showed his face in public, saw the chance to realize his dream. He bought an piece of land from Nicaragua, at the west coast. He build up a ‘colony of peace’, where all who wanted to leave their old lives completely, could live. The only thing they had to do, was give what they possessed to the state. Those would use it for all people to give them what they needed. Nothing less, nothing more. In this state, there was no poverty, no misuse of people, because all were equal, and all got the same. They got food, a house to live and the protection of the state.
The world said this was wrong. This was communism again, and that had just proved it couldn’t work. They called the state Utopia, because it wasn’t possible. But the people of the colony of peace took that as an name of honor, and in 1992 the name became official. ‘Communism wasn’t possible, because it needs the power of the state. All people in here volunteered, and instead of too less money, in here they have none. Everyone is free to leave again, and they will get their money back, but most of them don’t want to.’ Was what the Utopian government told the rest of the world.
More and more people started to like the idea, and in 1994 there were 3 million people living in Utopia. Nicaragua never expected this, and they decided to take back what was originally theirs. They build up a military force with the money they got from the USSR to dig the Nicaragua channel. Luckily for Utopia, they found out about the enemies plans before they were attacked, and they bought and hired weapons and mercenaries from all over the world. in December 1994, Nicaragua attacked.
Utopia was more than ready for them. The air force they build up, consisting 4 mig-29’s, 12 f-14 Tomcat’s, 8 A-10 thunderbolt IIs, 6 Saab Drakens and 14 Saab Viggens, had the air superiority. The land army, consisted entirely of hired mercenary veterans, had an hard time though.
The Utopian navy, consisting 3 S-frigates bought from the Netherlands, 3 converted merchant ships, outfitted as helicarrier and 3 utopian build modernized S-frigates (which weren’t ready the first months of the war), was perfectly balanced against the enemy’s navy. But during the 2 years the war lasted, utopia build new ships: the Elvira class. These ships turned the tide (together with more and better aircraft from the air force) and Nicaragua was defeated.
From the negotiations for peace, Utopia was given all what was left of the Nicaraguan military and the almost completed channel through Nicaragua. In 2000, Utopia told the world they were at a new point in history. The channel, now named Utopia Channel, was finished. Utopia City, the city that had grown from the original ‘colony’, now contained 4 million of Utopia's 7 million inhabitants. The city and the channel locks next to it were powered by the first large cold nuclear fusion reactor in the world. the power of this reactor, which supplied an almost unlimited amount of energy, improved the life standards for the inhabitants.
At the same time, the military had grown as well. The Utopian Armed Forces were now able to design their own weapons completely. Large shipbuilding and aircraft design projects were running, and in 2010 they would have an navy which was capable of helping out all countries that came into the same problems as they had faced themselves.
In 2009, Russia attacked China. Utopia gathered her allies and send a carrier battle group towards the Chinese coast. This turned the tides, and gave the Chinese military the chance to regroup and resist. Although 1/12 of the Chinese surface was taken over, an peace agreement was reached in only 3 months, and the rich coastline which Russia aimed for was never reached.
After this, utopia declared that they wanted to start with the formation of an unified earth. they would take the first step themselves, and thus formed their military and those of their allies into an large peacekeeping force, the freedom forces. But the nations which had the military power before this, the USA, Russia and France, weren’t happy with this declaration. They made their own: they declared war on the freedom forces. This was the start of an war that would last the next 12 years.
a few notes for this: the story is changed this way so the balance would be more even.
- Utopia hasn't got an HUGE fleet of itself, but together with it's allies, it has.
- Russia hasn't lost all it's fleet because it was neglected, so it is still an superpower in the 2000's.
- both the USA as Russia aren't as powerful as they were during the cold war, though, because they scrapped half their militaries during the crisis
- nuclear weapons won't be used, because many countries are still neutral in the war, and nobody want's them all against them. due to the 1970 and 1985 treaties the bombs are too powerful to be used, anyway.
