Here is the last ship:

SMS Schlesien
The last ship of the class, Linienschiff R, was ordered at the Schichau shipyards in Danzig and laid down on November 19th, 1904, launched on May 28th, 1906 and finally commissioned on May 5th, 1908. She was named after the Prussian province of Silesia (Schlesien in German), today mostly part of Poland.



Schlesien joined the fleet in the I. Battle Squadron and like her sisters, she conducted several training courses and maneuvers over the next years, mostly in the Baltic, Scandinavia and the Atlantic. In 1911, the Deutschland-class ships were transferred to the II. Battle Squadron and in 1912 her training course in the summer was moved to the Baltic instead of Scandinavia due to the Agadir crisis.



During the first years of the war, Schlesien was part of the main battle feet that, during the initial raids, waited on the high seas while the battlecruisers tried to lure out parts of the British fleet.

In the advance towards the Battle of Jutland, Schlesien was part of the IV. Division under Admiral Mauve and was the second to last battleship in the German line. During the multiple turns of the German Fleet during the battle, the pre-dreadnought either hampered the overall mobility of the fleet or ended up at positions too far away from the enemy.

Later that day, Mauve and his old ships could engage the British Fleet to screen the heavily damaged German battlecruiser force under Admiral Hipper. Due to poor visibility, Schlesien did not score any hits with her main guns, but suffered a near-hit by a high caliber shell with shrapnel killing a man and wounding another.
When the German fleet marched home during the night, Schlesien was part of the rear end of the fleet, together with Schleswig-Holstein, Von der Tann and Derfflinger. The night raids of the British forces also directed their energy against Schlesien, but the old battleship escaped unscathed.



The rest of the war Schlesien was used as a training ship with parts of her weaponry removed. When in 1918 the famous sailor revolution broke out in Kiel, Schlesien left the port before it could reach her crew, but a short time later, when she anchored in Flensburg, the Captain allowed most of her crew to leave the ship and join the revolution, including most of the engine and stoker personnel. The ship then wandered through the Baltic, avoiding revolutionary forces, with her cadet crew replacing the missing engine personnel.

Schlesien was then decommissioned on November 1st, 1918.
