Democratic Stratocracy of Northernland (Noordland) is a Nation which is in quite the same position as we are now, tension is rising across the European mainland as Russia gears towards war.

Noordland is a combination of The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and a piece of Germany.
It is on good footing with its former colonies and strives to secure shipping routes, protecting it against pirates, Iran (which became more aggressive, after the fiasco that is ISIS and the refugee problem) while Iran has not declared outright war against NATO (which would be foolish) it has become more threatening against merchant vessels.
Where India tries to export, Iran tries to embargo it.

Therefore Northerland maintains a strong blue-water force and maintains Amphibious capabilities as well as a few stronger units such as Destroyers.
It is currently developing a Offensive capable Destroyer which it expects to field in ~2030 in the meantime it will upgrade it's current fleet.

History:
1910, The leaders of the Kingdom of the Netherlands noticed that Germany was building up a stronger army. triggering to build up their own forces.
New weapons were designed and local troops from the east-indies and West indies were shipped in.

After WWI broke out The Netherlands did not remain neutral, making an alliance with Belgium and Luxembourg called the Noorderfront Alliantie (Northern-Front Alliance) to stop Germany in becoming a colonial power and building an empire in Europe. however their forces were not ready yet to take on the German army on its own. But they stood their ground, losing some border wars but maintaining overall integrity.
France, however was overrun, but with the help of the UK climbed back into the saddle. Soon The UK and France began their march towards Berlin.
Later in the war The Netherlands captured Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, due to the lower resistance provided with the almost beaten German army.
After the war, North Rhine-westphalia was divided between Luxembourg and Belgium. The Rhineland and Saarland were taken by France, The UK took Baden-Württemberg.

In 1921 an uprising came to be in the countries that were formerly the NFA, Most of the people deemed it unworthy that even tough there was a troop buildup and large amounts of colonial troops were shipped in it was still not enough to drive Germany back, only with the help of the UK and France. they believed the Leadership of the countries were to blame and the people tried to take leadership of the nations them self and unify the three countries.
However due to a strong military presence and most of the people that served in the armed forces at the time believed that the government actually saved them from defeat by building up the troops early. So the revolt was beaten down.
The rioters disbanded but still believed in a unified northern front.

In 1922 A huge schooling program came to be in the Netherlands, mostly because of the now German territory being part of the country, The military was left neglected and all the focus was spend on Education and a Healthcare system.
New machinery required parts, therefore a new industry was founded, a lot of know-how was to be found in the newly annexed territory so a new industry sprung up, older generations were taking Dutch language courses to communicate with dutch companies.
When the schooling program was only a month underway the leaders of the East and West indies also demanded education. Mainly because revolts were starting to spring up among the locals also demanding education. This lead to massive improvements in infrastructure in the west and east indies.
Farming was becoming increasingly effective with the newly learning population.

When 1939 arrived most of the 17 year olds and adult population in Lower Saxony and Shleswig-Holstein were speaking more dutch than German, when Germany invaded Poland the East-Netherlands (Lower Saxony, Shleswig-Holstein) were shocked by their former countrymen that they would start war again.
Thus strengthening their bond with the dutch people. Due to the neglection of the Armed forces by the Dutch there was little that could be done when Germany invaded. the Industry located in Lower Saxony and Shleswig-Holstein was soon transformed into war factories and WW2 would proceed much the same as in the history books.

During the war Lower Saxony and Shleswig-Holstein were constantly under bombardement, by propaganda, it was the Dutch government trying to sabotage the factories producing war machines for the Germans.

1945, Soon after WWII ended the territories belonging to the German empire were given back to Germany, however soon after Lower Saxony, Shleswig-Holstein were turned German again. Riots broke out by the now Dutch schooled workforce, the propaganda and the schooling program had
turned the young people into more Dutch then German, with the German war atrocities still fresh in mind they declared them selfs to be Dutch. After a few months and increasly more riots and revolts their wish was finally granted.

1948, With the rebuilding of the country a sense of anger came over the Netherlands, how could the three countries that once stood against the onslaught of the German Empire be wiped away so easily.
Turning their eyes once again to the government now either run by people who experienced WWI or fought it, demanding questions. Slowly the longing feeling to the NFA came back among the people of the Netherlands, but this feeling not
only grew within the hearts and minds of the Dutch people but also by the Belgian and Luxembourgian people. Meetings happend in the basements of the people. The government noticing this did nothing but only directed the oncoming storm towards the Queen. Hoping to gain more power this way.
A silent propaganda war was carried out, in the west of the Netherlands claiming that the Queen had fled the country to escape from WW2 in the East, in the newly acquired regions, that the Army had saved them not the Queen.

In the East-Indies, revolts started breaking out, how could they be saved by America rather than their own nation.

1949, soon after the beginning of the new year Indonesia declared itself independent, The Netherlands Reluctantly agreed, many who served with the Dutch forces in WWI fled to the Netherlands.

The effects of the propaganda war within the Netherlands became visible, the people rallied, not against the government but against the queen, this however also had unintentional side-effects as the Belgian and Luxembourgian people also revolted, uniting the NFA factions that were dormant for a long time.
The NFA crossed borders and started revolts, the Army did not intervene as the protesters were actively praising them. Confused and overwhelmed, the government did not know how to respond. Eventually in each of the three countries the NFA party leaders rose to power, and as agreed in meetings held a long time ago by former NFA leaders removed borders between The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

They called this newly created nation Noordland. From the word noord meaning north and land meaning land combining them led to Noordland or the Northernland, however the leaders of the NFA factions could not decide who from them would lead this country, either feeling them self unfit or being judged unfit by the people.
So the NFA leaders decided that there were to be elections, however a requirement for applying for the position of leadership was service to the country, meaning only commissioned officers who served at least 10 years in the Armed Forces and are honorably discharged could be voted for, however he could never rule alone, as 6 other representatives must be chosen as well.
So if the chosen representative was from the Army, an Navy and Air-force candidate had to be selected as well, 3 advisers strictly civilian but, having served at least 3 years in the Armed forces only representing the will of the people. All 6 had to be in agreement for a plan/law/policy to be elected. this was to keep Noordland from becoming a dictatorship.
All had to come from different regions, to represent the population well, so each region would have elections on all 6 positions, where the best representatives were chosen. then the country-wide elections where each top 6 of each region would campaign for their importance. then the 6 with the most votes would be chosen.
If 2 from the same region were chosen in the top 6 the one with the most votes will pass, the other will be replaced by the top ranking representative of the not yet represented region.
The Leader of Noordland was to be called Commander of the Nation (Commandant der Noordland), An Active duty Army representatieve would be called Commander of the Army (Commandant de l'Armée) An active duty Navy representative would be called Admiral of the Navy (Admiraal der Zeestrijdkrachten)
An active duty representative from the Airforce would be called Commander of the Air-force (Befehlshaber der Luftwaffe)
civillian representatives would be called People's voice (La voix du peuple (La voix in short))

Official languages of Noordland include Dutch, German and French.
The Capital is Utrecht as voted by the NFA leaders.
