I'll believe it when I see it, but the news is still uplifting.

Sounds like if it gets back to sea, its mighty engines will be castrated.

More like that her engines will be completely replaced.

Anyway, according to her current condition, works needed to be done would be quite huge.

I'm a bit bittersweet about this. On a side, I'm happy that the old lady might live on doing what she was built for instead of rusting in some forgotten pier. On the other hand I'd prefer her to be scrapped right now instead of beign turned into another France/Norway thing.

All indications are that the hull is in very good shape - especially for being as old as she is.

I've fired off an email to Crystal Cruises asking for any current sources.

Yes, I want to do this. :D

The idea of seeing the grand old lady turned into a France/Norway cruise ship, turns my stomach, but there is always the cloud's silver lining with her being a live ship, instead of a rusting hulk. I believe that her engines will be replaced by some 'green' type of engines (but her funnels can be retained, albeit with a different function).
Any way when I'll see her restored and sailing, that is when I'll believe it.

It will surprise me, if it happens.

That what can kill it, is it's engines, since the engine is so big and are an part of the ship, could make it just to difficult and costly to do something with.

That depends. The big kicker is the engineering spaces and how those are framed and bulkheaded. I could see a diesel-electric plant subbed in for the turbines and boilers, but that might mean particular marine diesels and electric final drives built to reverse engineered specifications. Only two establishments currently know how to do this to order. This is not something Hyundai can do.

MANN for the diesels and Westinghouse for the generator motors. They are extremely expensive.
