As the title indicates, it was designed in 1957. It was designed to replace the WWII vintage Flowers and Hunt IIs that the RDN used to patrol Greenland.
However, when Hans Hedgaard sank in 1959, it was realized that the Navy needed a unit far more capable SAR unit, so four units of the Ice-hardened, Helicopter capable Hvidbjørnen class was build instead.
Its combat roles were taken over by the two units of the Peder Skram Class.
All in all not a bad switch, though they would have been pretty.
I still need to add passive stabilizers and sonars. Has anyone drawn the Type 170 and the Type 174? From what I can see in the archive all the units that carried it are without underwater hull. Most of them are still by unknown.
