Hi all,

I came across this drawing in a Russian forum. It seems to indicate that the Soviets were planning to convert a commercial ro-ro of the KAPITAN SMIRNOV type (project 1609) into a helicopter carrier (project 10210 Khalzan). Alternativaly, it could also just be that the navy was planning to build the project 10210 based on the hull design of the project 1609, but my Russian is not that good:

Indeed, this was the original idea, but the Khalzan evolved to completely different ship (only under water hull was reatained from Smirnov) and the collapse of USSR kill it.

I wonder why not pay attention to Project 11780, the real LHD project of Soviet Navy based on Project 1143. would begin to build after the finishing of Project 11438, as Anti-submarine Cruiser(PKR), to replace Project 1123 and 1143.
