When I say "nuclear sub," I mean nuclear-armed.
You know, with warheads and stuff?

I suppose that it's basically just a matter of political decision (necessary to secure funding for moving from "being technically capable" to "actually doing it") and some time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_an ... estruction

(I'm leaving aside an issue of any international treaties regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons and of the sanctions that might - and most likely would, except for some extraordinary circumstances that would negate such treaties on a worldwide scale - occur had Brazil decided to violate or discard these treaties, as it's an issue completely separate from "technical/engineering" capabilities).

Yeah, I read that page.
What about a U-209?
They have some of those, would it be a challenge to convert one to mount nuclear weapons?

The question is why would you want to bother? There's nobody within Brazil's sphere of influence that would require a nuclear deterrent.

You'd be limited to torpedoes and tube launched cruise missiles.

Note: The following is filled with rectal extraction presumptions, and should not be taken seriously.

The development of nuclear devices that can fit aboard a submarine is much more complex than the development of nuclear weapons in the first place. While you don't have to develop truly exotic systems (such as linear implosion) for the devices, you do have to miniaturize the components bellow what is needed for aircraft delivery and ballistic missile delivery. Due to the challenges this presents, I'd rank the task as "Very hard, and they would have to decide to do so, which is highly unlikely." This is driven home by the fact that their indigenous reactor program had major issues before being dropped in favor of imports.

My Model UN teacher made a big mistake in not assigning me a partner for the Nuclear Weapons simulation.
I should not be trusted to work alone.
