Westland SH-52a Sea Heron
Prior to the introduction of the Sikorsky Seahawk, the Westland SH-52a Sea Heron was the dominant ASW helicopter in the IFAN. The aircraft is based on the Sikorsky HH-52 Seaguard helicopter that was used in the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
They were primarily deployed on the Condamine and Murrumbidgee Class frigates although the type was also utilised on the air capable Brisbane Class DDG when deployed inshore.
The Sea Heron was powered by a single 1,250 hp (930 kW) General Electric T58-GE-8B turboshaft engine and was designed to be amphibious so that flotation gear would not be required for over water flights.
The type was introduced into the IFAN in 1965 and were finally retired in 1998.
