Excellent job again Novice! One remark about the post-rebuild WINCHESTER CASTLE if I may: as rebuilt, her funnel did not have a horizontal top anymore, it was angled, as seen here:

Nice page of before-and-after postcards of this ship here: http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/UnionCastle4 ... nchor68151

Union-Castle, as well as H&W were part of what is known as the Pirrie-Kylsant empire.
Owen Cosby Philipps was the chairman of the Royal Mail Steam Packet, while Lord Pirrie was at the helm of Harland & Wolff. In 1905 the two companies had started a relationship which resulted in the above mentioned empire, which in the end crashed because of dubious financing in 1930 soon after the Wall Street collapse.

A smallish cargo ship from Germany, the s.s. Soneck built for DDG "Hansa" of Bremen.
During WW2 the ship was captured in Batavia (Dutch East Indies), by the cruiser Java, and after the war was used as Karsik by N.V. Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij
A sister-ship named Schwaneck was cancelled

Great addition Novice.

You can just see hundreds of this sort of ship making up the convoys that kept the UK alive in the dark days of 1940-41.
