In 1917 the Harland & Wolff shipyard at Belfast had built the liner Vedic for the Oceanic Steam Navigation company, better known as White Star Line. The Vedic was built as a 3rd class emigrants ship, but with the war still on, the ship was immediately taken and was converted for trooping. In 1920, after the war's end, she was converted back for her intended service, transporting emigrants from war torn Europe to Canada.
In 1925 the ship was put on the Australian route of white Star, still as an emigrants carrier, until 1930, when she was laid up. With the Cunard and White Star merger of 1934, the Vedic came to the end of her days, being scrapped at Rosyth.
SS Vedic was notable for being the first White Star ship to have only steam turbines engines, and was one of the first ships to be scrapped after the Cunard White Star merger.
