See my point? The definition of a fifth gen is so fluid that it's hard properly apply it.
In case you're wondering, it's the USN that's calling it a fifth gen.

of course the USN call it an fifth gen. they are the ones who wait for their first real stealth, which is the F-35.... and of the definitions I posted earlier, even the F-35 is an 4.5.....
but indeed, nobody has really defined it. but well.... the previous generations weren't that clear too in their early days.

Why is that "of course"? If I'm not mistaken they're trying to get as many funds to buy F35's for as they can.
Saying that your current fighters are superior (Which is what they're indirectly doing by applying the fifth gen label) is bad marketing.

because that is the US policy
their fighters aren't superior, but the navy is.
that said, I recently saw an super hornet upgrade with stealth bay pod and fuel tanks on top of the hull..... which I would call 4.9-5th gen. that one was meant for export though, if I recall correctly.... Dutch air force, why do you buy JSF's when we can get something like that!

5th Gen is generally classified as Full Stealth, Integrated Avionics with AESA Radars, Ability to Supercruise, and possess Supermaneuverability(?). The Navy can say what they want about the SH, but it's clearly not 5th gen. It's 4.5/4+ Gen.

As for the F-35, like I say on IRC, the F stands for Fail as it fails to be a 5th gen, and just fails in general.

All this needs to be taken with big pinches of salt.

Lack of seatime, poor training, poor leadership, spares issues, qaulity control issues etc make all these grand plans seem rather hollow. Much like the Soviet Navy in the 1970s many of the ships looked impressive but most sat in haroubr most of the time and the crews were conscripts and poorly trained and led by career officers but hampered by political considerations and the qaulity wasn't as high as NATO vessels.

The J-20 looks like a nice F-22 clone but without a decent AESA, supercruise-capable turbofans, integrated sensors and RAM coatings its nothing more than a pretty clone but no better than a 1980s fighter in capability. If the Chinese managed to cock-up licence-building the Su-30 series then it shows there are fundamental basic flaws behind the impressive appearances.

China has a decent leadership, but what they need is more people.
They have more people in training then any other country, but when will they be ready?
They build rapidly so much stuff, that they can barely handle it with new people. They have thousands, but still its not enough.
Their material's are well produced, but maby lack some stuff the western has.
But if their stealth capability works, and their radars (On navy ships they do), then its a problem when they are used.
About the J-20, i dont know anything about it, it looks decent. But everything that does so, can also be bad.
Look at the V-22 osprey, had alot of troubles to in the start. While it was expensive, and well produced. So.
Only thing we can look towards to, is their weapons and items being used in a war. And see if ''the propaganda'' that the stuff is rubbish, is true or not.

There is NO way ''you'' (hood) can now its rubish.
Did you know China is the leader in laser technolegy?
That they bought up many companies around the work. (Maby they got new stuff out of here)

I do know, they use the same waterjets as norwegian navy does, for their Type 022. So that cant be rubbish then, doesnt it?
