I wish I could roll my eyes so emphatically that it was visible through computer monitors and time zones.

News on chinese defences.

NAVY:
China has created/finished in the last 6 months in the navy:
*= Aprox according picture's, not 100% sure but around the number
1 LPD
3 Destroyers
9 Frigate's
3 LCAC's (One is test bed)
32* Small missile ships (Type 022)
300* IFV's

They are still building other ships right now.
1 Carrier
1 LHD
1 LPD
1 LSD
3 Destroyer
3 Frigate's
2 OPV's
2 LCAC's
6 Small missile ships (Type 022)
1 new hospital ship

They also created plans for new ships in the upcoming time.(May not be created, or they will)
One Cruiser type with a hell lot vls (Missile cruiser, similar to the kirov class kinda, but shorter)
4 new LHD's op type 081 class
2 new LPD's of type 071 class
*? new LSD class
2 new destroyer types, carrier escort and fleet escort(Both have the creapy Smart-L copy >.>)
1 new frigate type, carrier escort (Has the creapy Smart-L copy >.>)
1 new OPV class (Similar to sigma class), according official news, 2 has been laid down. And another 18 will be build in 2011 added to these 2)
1 new stealth missile ship (Little bit bigger then type 022, with stealth ak 630)
1 new Landing ship dock class (one is laid down)
1 new radar ship (Contains large radars for ocean control)
1 new hospital ship
2 new AOR's planned
1 new type of JSS is under development (will it come?)

ARMY:
What has been build, nobody knows exept the leader i quess.
But what has been planned to build, or building for types:
1 new M.B.T type is under testing, and starts building this year
1 new Small M.B.T is being build, similar to the larger M.B.T but contains less shells, and is a little bit slower.
2 new IFV, one for the navy, one for the army (navy type is lighter)
1 new Anti air tank, already started building since june 2010

Air force:
1 new type of 6th gen fighter under development
1 new type of 5th gen fighter under testing, soon starting building
1 new type of AWECS plane, also for carriers

All i know is this right now, if i find more ill post it.
But i also know, the LPD's they are creating, and the frigate's.
They are building them like hot cakes.
One TYPE 054+ class frigate was laid down in may, and was released in the water 6 months later, and it was not painted, no guns. A few sensors. And only 10 days later it was finished!
One type 71 lpd was seen being build in modular blocks, and 7 months later it was in trials.
If this is true information, then i pee my pants and hope that european nations get more money to build ships again...

The US has just barely started researching 6th Gen, so I highly doubt China's doing so as well, especially when they're just getting into the 5th gen business. And AFAIK, they ended naval fixed-wing AEW&C development for a helicopter based version.

6th gen is also in development by the usa.
Not building or what else, but they are looking into what form is the best, and what for ''new'' gadgets can be added.
Since china and the usa is developing lasers, i bet thats one of them.
Or are lasers not so good to use on fighters?

6th gen.... what is in development then? I hope you're not talking about that concept art by boeing..... because that was just some stuff like 'what could an 6th gen be like... if I recall correctly, those were also no real 6th gens, but more like 5.5 for the replacement of the hornets.

What exactly does it take to be a sixth gen fighter? As I understand it the whole fifth gen thingy is more of a marketing term than any official definition.

that is the problem: it is not yet defined what 6th gen really is. all studies currently running (that I know of) are researching right that :P

Wouldn't it be a good idea to define what a fifth gen fighter is first?

J-20-china
JSF-a lot of countries
Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft-india
FGFA-india
ATD-X Shinshin-japan
KF-X-south korea
LMFS-russia
PAKFA-russia

5th gen, is a 4th gen fighter, with the stealth feature.
A 6th gen fighter, is a 5th gen with new weapons and a ferther developed stealth feature. Plus maby space entry option?

that really isn't making any sense, mitch.
fifth gen is not only stealth, to the list should be added:
- supercruise
- manouvrability
- AESA radars
etc.
