W-1 Class: built in 1922-1925. W-4 was built two years after her sisters, and sported an higher fore-funnel.

Only W-4 survived WWII, to be scuttled in 1946 by the Brits at Singapore.

W-5 Class: a slighly modified W-1 class built in 1928-1929. They featured a tripod foremast and different bridge structure. Apparently W-5 had her aft-mast shortened after the Tomozoru incident.

Both were sunk during WWII.

Really nice work on these minesweepers.
I guess the AU project is going to generate a few of these real IJN smaller ships?

Great work! Japan seems to have taken mine warfare seriously.
I don't remember any USN minesweepers built from 1919 - 1939,
but the IJN had quite a few.

Maybe due to the large ish numbers built in 1919 (48 Lapwing-class) they also had lots of flush deckers (267 Wickes and Clemson-class destroyers) that are nearly obsolete as fleet DDs and could be used if needed (some converted in 37).

The IJN Lost two ships in the opening days of the Russo-Japanese War because of naval mines, so minelaying and minesweeping duties were felt as beeign quite necessary by the IJN. Even it the USN ultimately manged to fill the gap and overwhelm Japanese tactics for mine-warfare, it also true that this particular field has survived straight through the JMSDF. Japanese ships not only had to remove all naval mines around thier home waters after WWII, but also did it at the end of the Gulf War.
