As far as I know, that was never the case for Names. My teacher would have killed me if I ever wrote Hessen like this. It works the other way around, the "ß" can be replaced by a double "s", and has been, more and more, after the grammar reform, but also when you use all capital letters, like crossword puzzles.

I am reasonably sure, that the Name "Hessen" was never spelled with an "ß".

The US military governement, proclaimed the state of "Groß-Hessen" on 19 September 1945 by issuing the "Proclamation No 2":

As you can see, it was spelled with a "double-s".

But all this should not distract from your fantastic drawings.

P.S.:
For what it's worth, the official Bundesmarine website states the ships' name as "Hessen":

Best regards from North Rhine-Westphalia! :-)

Nice drawing Bezo of a powerful ship. Welcome back to the world of receiving comments rather than just making them :)

is it not also a case when the "ß" could be used for names but only when it is from the beginning, instead of replacing 'ss'? not that I know german other then a bit of high school a long time ago, but that would make sense to me.

Being German and from Hessen I can only say: You are absolutely right.
Today, the "ß" (or SZ as it's pronounced) is only used after long vocals. You sure know the yachtbuilder Heesen, in German he'd be written Heßen.

Shall we stay on task, guys? I'd rather have constructive input on the ship drawings than have the thread filled with grammatical pedantry... - The "offensive" misspelling has been removed. :(
