Ian, your 2008 version was good enough at that time, but SB has progressed, the style has evolved. So, yes the 2008 ships in the archive look pale when compared to the new versions. Even the parts used had evolved and now look better than the older parts (and your Alaska class drawings are a case in themselves).

It's certainly impressive to see how far SB has come in the interval. From my looking around the main site images, your Scharnhorst certainly wasn't badly done by the prevailing standard, it's just that the standard has advanced so much in six years that everything from then looks a little washed out.

Hi,

in my current "quest" to get my earlier drawings into an uploadable state, I stumbled upon "Admiral Graf Spee" and came to the conclusion, that only a complete redraw could fix the errors I made previously.

It took me a while, but here's what I came up with:

-"Admiral Graf Spee" during the Spithead naval review on 20th May 1937 - a version with full "flags flying" might follow:

- Multiple angle view of "Graf Spee" during August 1939. The drawing representes her after leaving Wilhelmshaven on 21. August 1939 - bound for the south Atlantic and awaiting the outbreak of WW II:

I'm still not entirely satisfied with how the belt armour turned out. I think the "under part" of the belt should run smoothly into the side of the bulbous hull-sides.
I haven't come up with a good solution on how to represent that, but I will put some more thought into it. Maybe someone else has an idea?

Camoed variants will follow.

Thanks for looking!

I think the rest of us can retire...

The Graf is just so, so....wonderful... - really a smashing good piece of art, mate! I can see no issues, least of all the one you describe!

Another wonderful piece of pixel artwork from a master crafts man.

I see those examples of the Graf Spee and know why I should stick to kitbashing.... ;)

well, a few things make me wonder.
- on the front view, there is a knuckle in the side of the ship. this would be just below the edge of the armoured belt. however, I cannot find this knuckle in the side view?
- showing the shape of the hull would be done quite perfectly with the 45 degrees hull shading. not that I want to force that onto you, but try it out maybe?
- the shading on the bow, due to the flare of the bow, is not matching between front and side view.
- I think the front and back views would look better with the cranes folded inwards (then it matches the top and side views too :P)
- the front view shows the bilge keel to be high in the middle and low at the edges. the side view shows it the other way around (which seems correct). or at least it seems that way to me.

other then that, awesome!

If I have time, I'll reflag and overhaul the QE of 1935/37 I did when I "mended" Hood's Queen Elizabeth-class a few years ago. Then the Graf and Ashigara could have a host as well! (She was at the time the Fleet flagship for the Home Fleet...) - Maybe we ought to open a new topic? "The Great Fleet Review of Spithead 1937 - The Quiet Before the Storm"?!?
