Working on Ural Bomber project again, I meet some kind of mystery and I will need to ask you lads if anyone have additional info about it.

The Ju 89, both prototypes used inline liquid cooled engines. The Jumo 211A and DB 600A, both of them have slim cowlings an many pictures show it that way. But there is one from times of war, highly probable the V2 prototype in service with something odd.



This is rather bad angle for this type of discussion but, for me those cowlings look like the ones used in radial engines. They are larger, more rounded with... forget the word, open hatches that regulate air flow alongside cylinders. I know the pic is not the best quality and probably the only one showing Ju 89 in times of war.

What do you think lads, my eyes make a fool of me or there is something in it?

My eyes seem to be fooling me too right now too, but those do look like radial engines to me.

Nah that's Ju 89 the V2 prototype. But testing platform for BMW 132 engine... hmmm... is possible.

Don't forget that some FW190s had inline (with radial radiator) and some radial engines so not sure you can tell from outside

Only the high level 190's had inline engine, the Daimler-Benz DB 603. Also the Daimler-Benz DB 605 and Jumo 211B-1 used round radiators. But as it is possible that Ju 89 did test Jumo 211B-1 engines I would put my bets more on BMW 132.

Rhade's photo looks like a Ju-90 to me. There is a line of cabin windows down the side and a side entry door and what appears to be white Med theatre markings (could be yellow E.Front markings but there are none on the wings and look too narrow to me). None of which is likely to appear on a Ju-89.

It is possible that you right Hood, there must be a mistake in photo description. It's indeed could be the Ju 90 from first production series for Lufthansa, they were very similar to Ju 89 from where they are delivered in straight line. Wings and tail is from Ju 89 and in later production models tail was different. But one thing is puzzling, on tail there is defense turret, but I don't know about any picture that show it in different planes. The first rear turrets appear in Ju 290 models and in different configuration. This is probably only an single plane modification. Still a little mystery for now.
