Little update on the ship..Thanks on Sir MC Spoilt B'stard's and schepper911's helpful suggestions and Sir Bezo's amazing drawing (thanks to schepper911 for the link)


Now, ditched the concept of 20mm F2 cannon as advised by Sir schepper911. Used Sir Bezo's Bofors 375mm launcher and replaced the 100mm gun with the latest.

Still had the aft elevated portion removed, now covered by the extended helideck. Moved the launcher (NSSM) on the superstructure and made other revisions and added some sort of details.

my only comment left now is that the DA-08 fitted on your drawing was developed in 1980, while the DA-05 fitted on the wielingen was developed in 1965-1970. I think you should have the DA-05 instead

As i said before, i found the sketch of E71 with flight deck and even a hangar on it! Some additional info i found is that they would be build with a passive towed sonar.
- 100mm gun
- mk 29 NSM
- 2x tripple torpedotube

so it would have been a real ASW frigate.
Maybe u can do something with it in your AU.

Thank you for appreciating my rework on the E-71s. Feel free to use it any way you want! One small suggestion though: why not move the Exocets aft of the funnel? Right now you've unnecessarily cramped their position; basically having their blasts directed straight at the funnel base! Also, I think their present angle would've been precluded by the that said wide funnel base.

I do think the ship lacks a sonar, the real wielingen ships had a AN-SQS 510 hull mounted sonar for its ASW tasks.

I knew i seen it before, but it was a hard find on internet, specialy because the belgian navy does not have that many info arround. But the wielingen class has a little spot in my memory, i been aboard once in '06 and was shocked how small it was and still quite capable.

I like to see some ''alternate loadouts'' of this class something like dutch S/L/M frigates had, one hull diffrent roles.

Belgium: Wielingen-class ASW frigate


The 'Wielingen' class were the first frigates to be built and designed in Belgium, and are the largest ships in the Belgian navy. They are equipped with weapons and sensors from France, Sweden, Canada, the USA and the Netherlands. For surface action they have Exocet missiles and for air defense a Creusot-Loire dual-purpose 100 mm gun and Sea Sparrow SAMS. For ASW they have American Mk46 torpedoes and Bofors anti-submarine rockets. The 'Wielingen' class carries a heavy, well-balance armament in a compact hull. Of the original four ships built, only three remain in service.

On 22 December 1970, the Belgian government decided that the Navy could proceed to order 4 escort vessels from Belgian yards to replace the 6 old "Algerine" type escorts. The last of which was scrapped in 1969. Plans were already drawn up in 1964, with the "Koninklijke Marine" (Nl) providing technical support and advice. From 1971 this work was continued in cooperation with the two national shipyards Boel (Temse) and Cockerill (Antwerp). This would lead to the eventual building orders, and the first ship was laid down on March 5th 1974.

A contest was organized, and a reserve officer of the Navy provided the winning answer. "WESTDIEP" and "WIELINGEN" are 2 navigationable passages off the Flemish Banks, "WANDELAAR" on the other hand is a large sandbank off the Belgian coast.

The complement consists of 14 officers, 84 NCO's and 59 sailors, and is divided in 3 departments: Internal Service, Operations and Technical.

Missions include defense of the merchant navy by escorting convoys and conducting anti-submarine operations, self-defense against surface ships, and self-defense against aircraft.

The ships were victims of defense cuttings and were sold to Bulgaria, except for Wandelaar which was damaged in a 1993 exercise and written off and sold for scrap.

Another idea, maybe, is to look at the possibilities of Belgium buying or cooperating on the design of the S-type frigates of the RNLN. In the future I find it very possible that the Dutch and Belgian navies will develop co-existing classes such as the Australians and New Zeelanders did on the ANZAC class, so why not begin that relationship a little earlier. I think it's not far away from fiction to see a Belgian navy around 1980 with 4-6 improved Wielingen frigates and 4 S-frigates.

But nice to see a Belgian AU for once, to bad your image is broken...
