I'm just posting the side view to begin with to get some reaction to the viability of the design.

My thought is that the RN would just continue to build these in place of the Admirals, and if someone shoots Jackie Fisher, the Courageous class too. Any uncompleted hulls at wars end could still be converted to aircraft carriers. The bigger hull and deeper hull of these ships would make an interesting conversion.

Drawings for this thread, 1916 side and top, 1937 side and top, 1926/7 CV side and top, 1940 CV side and top views.

That's a good place to start, with one of CanisD's nice personal designs.

I am going to take some liberties to change a few aspects with the design.

Its a nice looking design.
I think you would need to increase the beam slightly to allow for the topweight of the extra turret.
I like the concept of this fast BB, 28kts is not too fast and so does not need masses of hp. R&R had 112,000hp and had 42 boilers!
I wonder if there is scope to upgrade the armour, something with a 12in thick belt and maybe a 3-1.5in deck would be slightly better perhaps.
The carrier version looks good, you might want to add more larger spaces to ventilate the hangars though. I suppose about 30-40 aircraft could be accommodated.

Karl94, good luck with the Queen Victoria, I agree that was one of Canis's best works. Oddly enough the Royal Sovereigns were first envisioned as 5x2 15in armed versions of the QE class, but the Admiralty wanted a length no greater than the Iron Dukes and it proved impossible. Also, the firepower from a 4x2 15in broadside was considered much superior to a 5x2 13.5in broadside so the need wasn't really needed.

Karle,

actually Burt's book mentions there was Design 'X' IIRC for the Renown class BCs that was only 15 ft longer and had one extra turret, so your concept is not far from what was thought up by the original designers.

Completed side and top view of CV conversion completed 1927. (I have changed the side view using a later drawing by Hood).

Being completed later than the original Battlecruisers the aircraft carrier conversions had better machinery fitted that allowed the ships to keep the same speed as the BC's.

I would envisage a total class of 8 ships. 4 BC and 4 CV. Renown, Repulse, Reliant, Resistance (BC's). Lord Kitchener, Lord Gambier, Lord Cochrane, Lord Hawke (CV's).

Thanks for the comments guys.

A very beautiful design, and she would have actually been a lot more useful than the battlecruisers.
