HMS Diomede (I/D-92) (From Wiki)
Constructed at Vickers Armstrong, Barrow, she was constructed too late to take part in World War I and was consequently completed at the Royal Dockyard, Portsmouth, 22 February 1922. Upon commissioning Diomede joined the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron on the China Station in 1922. In 1925 she was transferred to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy at Devonport where she served until 1935, apart from a refit in 1929-1930. In 1931 she rendered assistance to the town of Napier, New Zealand after the devastating Hawkes Bay earthquake, supplying medical personnel, equipment, guards and firemen, along with her sister ship Dunedin.

Upon the notification that the two cruisers of the New Zealand Division were to be replaced by Leander class cruisers, in 1935 Diomede started her voyage home to Britain to be paid off into the reserve. En route the Abyssinian Crisis broke out and she was diverted to the 4th Light Cruiser Squadron, part of the East Indies Station based at Aden for possible action against the Italians. Upon relief by HMS Achilles on 31 March 1936 she was paid off and spent the next three years in the reserve fleet or as a troop ship.

With the growing likelihood of war, Diomede was reactivated. 3 September 1939 found her with the 7th Cruiser Squadron serving as part of the Home Fleet on Northern Patrol duties. Before the despatch of the 7th Cruiser Squadron to the Mediterranean in 1940 in light of the Italian threat, Diomede was attached to the 8th Cruiser Squadron on the America and West Indies Station on shipping protection and patrolling duty. On 8 December 1940 she chased the German blockade runner Idarwald from Tampico, Mexico. Before a capture could be effected the crew of the German freighter set it afire and scuttled it off Cabo Corrientes, Cuba. The US destroyer USS Sturtevant observed the proceedings.

In early 1942 Diomede joined the 9th Cruiser Squadron as part of the South Atlantic and West African Squadron. After more than a decade of steaming it was decided to retire her from front-line service and from 22 July 1942 to 24 September 1943 at Rosyth Dockyard she converted into a training ship. With the end of the war she was reduced to reserve. On 5 April 1946 she was sold for scrap to Arnott Young of Dalmuir and arrived there for breaking up on 5 May.

Very nice work Krakatoa.
I'll cast a more critical eye over it when I'm at home with Friedman's British Cruisers in front of me (not sure if Dunedin is featured, but there are D class line drawings). Nothing strikes me at this stage as being incorrect and its a nice bit of work.

You might want to put it into an official template though so you have the correct font for the copyright etc. before the next uploading session.

Very Nice !

Should,
- The prop have black lines ?
- And do you want to remove a few double black lines ( bow flagpole/ bridge overhang/rear mast top/stern 2 stanchions/box behind rear gun/rear flagpole) ?

Seems a nice work. :)
(although things like double black lines are something that one always needs to be wary of)
And one very interesting for me for a particular reasone - two Danae class cruisers served during WW2 in the Polish Navy (though only one at a time) - first Dragon (from January 1943 to June 1944 when it was hit by German manned torpedo off the Normandy coast) and then Danae, renamed Conrad (from October 1944 to September 1946).

Very nice work!

On a first glance, I don`t think that there are too many double black lines.
Sometimes you just can`t avoid them...

As mentioned in my PM to you, some of the issues relating to the 'D' class needs to be addressed.
Gun mounting you have used is the wrong one. The correct gun is Mk.CPXIV type, to be found in the Official Parts Sheets thread, here
A scan from Friedman's British Cruisers book will also help you to refine the above drawing

The image is large so only a link.
Please note that HMS Dunedin had the 'trawler bow' while the enclosed ship do not have.

Thanks for the photoscan from Friedmans Novice,

Unfortunately it is of one of the 'D's with the hangar below the bridge with the fly off ramp over the 'B' six inch. It is also 'as built' with the 2x3" AA.

I have taken a couple of features from that scan that seem to be generic to the 'D's and added them to the drawing. 6" changed to CPXIV mount.

I think that is the only plan of the D's in the book (a shame since there are numerous C class layouts). There is no photo of Dunedin in the book either (though it gets a couple of mentions in the text - nothing that helps here).
The problem is these ships had long lives and underwent many changes at different periods. As I have found with the Sovereigns, each ship is unique in details and the light cruisers are in more numbers and underwent more work so the variations are even greater. If you can find any photos than that may help refine any further details.

Thanks for your comments Hood,

To do the original layout changes from Novices 'C' class unit to the 'D' above I used 3 high res pics of 'D's between 1924 and 1927. Even at that stage there were variations between the ships. I only had one pic of Dunedin itself from an NZ site, depicting Dunedin when she was giving assistance to survivors of the Hawke Bay earthquake of 1931.

One of the biggest problems I found using the pics for identifying bits and pieces to add to the drawing is the bloody crew kept standing in the way! Or else they had awnings spread which shadowed out a lot of the area that I really wanted to look at. I could probably add a few more aerial lines but often they detract from the overall view when they arrive all at one point in a congealed mess.

Below is the best high res pic I could find of a 'D': (Sorry for the large size, but it does show Danae in perfect condition)
