Shipbucket

This is one of two ships I'm working on now. It's the Bogue Class CVE, built as a lend lease escort carrier, modified from something called a C-9 freighter....(presumably a mass produced hull type). It's a bit of a departure for me I'd say!

Basically, a certain somebody around here periodically whines about wanting to see more US built aircraft carriers. "Fine!" says I, "I'll do one".

NOTE: Feel free to correct any incorrect historical details, tell me I'm wrong, etc.

It was supposed to be a quick in/quick out. Maybe a variant or 3 with camo measures. The drawing is from the Book of General Plans for CVE-53 HMS Puncher. The Starboard Side and Top view are correct to the General Plans but I have not yet done any comparison to period images. The Port Side is being reconstructed from the deck elevations (and is NOT presentable, subject to all sorts of revisions, etc.) Parts are being used from Parts Sheets, which is new ground for me.

I could use some help!
I really don't know if I'm using the most current "Parts". I do know the aircraft and some inspiration came from Charybdis's Wasp (1942) drawing. For some reason I'm a big fan of any ship called "Wasp"
I'm also looking for appropriate weapons, sundries, antenna, and you name it.
I could really use some help on that Port Side if anyone has good info.

When all the bits are drawn for a ship class drawing, I'll worry about SB appropriate color, shadowing, and the stuff that brings the illustration to life.

Looking good so far.....

I am no USN expert so I won't offer any technical comment. I'll have a look if I have anything that will help for the port side, I suspect The Carrier King (BH) might have something up his sleeve!
However, this a very fine drawing so far and with some nice detailing already in place. I look forward to seeing this finished.
I think those are the latest Dauntless, Wildcat, Avenger we have. They could probably do with a repaint however.

Check very carefully each pic

Draw the Bogue class:
- 1943 version (1943 camo, 1943 aircrafts-paintings, early radars)
- spring 1944/1945 version (1944-1945 camo & aircrafts-paintings, improved radars)
- maybe a 1950s/1960s aircrafts-transport version ?

just asking, am I the only one who find it very offensive to start a post with this, effectively saying that all above is rubbish?

No, you're not. He starts off with basically saying all that hard work is trash, and then has the audacity to ask for certain drawings. I know what I'd tell him if I were the artist, but that'd probably get me banned from this wonderful forum.

Craig, you've done magnificent work...I for one can't wait to see her completed!

Thanks all so far for the info to digest!!! I was getting stuck simply because I simply don't have the resources to do the Class. For WWII my resources are primarily U-Boats and smaller craft leftover from modeling projects. I never looked at anything larger than destroyer escorts.

@ Hood: The aircraft are placeholders. I've not looked at what aircraft were carried or the time period paint specs for them yet.

@ ace: Hadn't gotten to hull shading yet, that was simply a placeholder band of color. I'll be using your tutorial and the best x-sections on the Book of General Plans I have.

@ Colombamike: Thanks, these are just the sort of items I was hoping to get my hands on. I've been getting too deep into this drawing without enough info...now I can start to roll. THX for the red-lined edits those will help as well...I was hoping for that later for the final clean-up.

Like I indicated in the intro post, specific ships, camo, etc. comes later (if I don't move on to other things). All I want to do is an accurate basic Class Drawing to start. As there were a lot built, folks here can then go nuts on specific ships, time periods, and all that.

Regarding the "BAH" comment...it rolled off my back. My hide is as thick as my head, I understand there's plenty of temperaments in the world, possibly translation issues between languages, PLUS I lived in the Armchair Railroad Geek world for a lot of years. They make maritime freaks look tame.

Friendly warning: Just don't argue with me on modeling period color, paint, and photo interpretation. I've the resources and background to shove that world down your throat in an authoritative manner. Basically, most armchair arguments are complete masturbatory, theoretical BS.

She's looking good Craigh.
I can't speak for all of the parts, but the Oerlikon and Bofors guns are the latest ones available. I'd stay away from elevated barrels for consistency's sake if nothing else. I realise this might result in double black lines but that's sadly the limitation of the art style.
Speaking of double black lines you do have a lot of them, primary on the catwalk and the deck supports.
