Google Sites is a free low-end webhosting service (very limited javascript & CSS) that offers 100megs of free space.

The great part is, they have a nice way of managing uploads, and for years I used them as my image host before I moved to dropbox.

Here is how to use it!

First, you need a free google account, and then go to http://sites.google.com, and make sure your account is set up.

Once you have a home/index page, click on "New page"

Once you have that, enter the new page's name, and select that you want to use a "File Cabinet". The File Cabinet type will let you upload files from your PC to their servers.

Now you can add new files, like I did here. Once a file is added, right click on view and select to copy the link location.

Once you have the image location, remove the last string from it:

So this:
https://sites.google.com/site/timothycizadlo/home/test/DDXsample2.png?attredirects=0
Becomes this:
https://sites.google.com/site/timothycizadlo/home/test/DDXsample2.png
Or even this:

Downsides:
  • Capitalization, Spacing, and non-standard characters don't work well.
  • It's google.
  • Total site size is 100 megs, which is not a lot.
Upsides:
  • It's free.
  • Because it's google, I have never seen it go down.
  • Because the pages can be in hierarchies, you can manage different projects easily.
  • You can Queue multiple files to be uploaded in a row

Thanks Timothy, I had never thought about it.
What about the Google Drive hosting? wouldn't it give you some more space, and I believe it is also free?

Hi Novice,

I think there's some sort of share-and-authentication mechanic that goes on with google drive that makes it impractical for disseminating pictures widely.

As apdsmith notes, google drive isn't a good tool for sharing images.

One thing I forgot to mention is that old copies are saved for a period of time (I've never tested how many or how long) allowing for recovery of overwritten files.

As I've never tried Google Drive , I stand corrected by my peers. I think I'll stick with Dropbox for now, or Photobucket (Photobucket, after all is the reason for the name Shipbucket)

That might be an interesting solution, at least as "interim backup". Thanks for this tutorial! :)
